I have an old mac clone that I bought from a friend a few years ago and rather than buy a new G3 or something I could save a lot of hassle by just getting the same speed processor. I got the 400mhz 1mg backside cache and was a little weary at first, I mean you are so worried any second something could go wrong and you end up with a worthless smoking motherboard.
I haven't purchased a processor upgrade before but carefully grounded myself to a metal plate on the exposed chassis and sat down to read the instructions, which were clear and very easy. I've put together bookshelves I had a harder time with...
First off run the software extension installer from a floppy and then shut it down, leaving it unplugged...the fact I can even remember this is a testament to their amazing instructions.
Clearly illustrating every step, I followed like six steps and that was it, I also put in a new hard drive while I was at it, which I had done before, and then started it up...
Worked perfectly, right away, everything was noticably different, I clicked windows opened and closed for a while before calling my friend up who had sold me the powercenter 150mhz and told him that for $400, I had a faster computer than his 350mhz G3. That plus the hard drive and usb/firewire card and we basically have the same computer.
I was a little nervous I wouldn't be able to pull that off, not being a techie or anything, but without any mishaps whatsoever in about a half hour I was back in buisness and firing up a bunch of games I haven't played in a while just to see the frame rate, and smoothness.
Thats why I purchased this in the first place after reading tons of people's reviews at powerwatch, every one was favorable.
The only problem now is that I think this is the farthest i can go with newertech. the G4 upgrade won't work in this clone otherwise I would have got it...oh well someday I'll break down and just get a brand new computer, but I doubt it...
