My wife and I recently visited Newport, Rhode Island. We had an exceptional time. We enjoyed snooping in the shops on Thames St., and swimming in the beautiful 2nd Beach along with exploring Cliffwalk. We ate at four different restaurants while we were there, one being Newport Creamery. We ate there two mornings in a row for breakfast after the Applebees connected to our hotel delivered a dissatisfying experience.
The specific Newport Creamery Im writing about is the one in Middletown, Rhode Island. Its actually on the borderline of Middletown and Newport, but you have no clue how many times I was corrected when I said I was in Newport, but I really was in Middletown. Its kind of like when you say youre in Orlando, but you really are in Kissimmee.
This Newport Creamerys parking lot is small and fills very quickly. There are some picnic benches outside. There is a window where you can order ice cream without going inside the restaurant first. We never did try the ice cream, but a hotel agent told me that it was out of this world. The hotel agent was also the one who recommended my wife and I to Newport Creamery instead of Applebees.
General Information
As the name suggests, Newport Creamery is large in the Newport area. It has various restaurants throughout Rhode Island, and there are two in Massachusetts. Youll find one in the Warwick Mall, Newport Mall, Providence on Smith St, and one located in Garden City Center. There are 14 Newport Creamery locations in all.
Newport Creamery has been a New England tradition for more than 70 years and counting! With a dedication to quality, Newport Creamery provides customers with fresh food, premium ice cream, a welcoming atmosphere, and fast, friendly service. --NewportCreamery.com
Atmosphere
Newport Creamery has a very odd atmosphere. Its like deja vu of the 70s: leather jackets, cigarettes, and cute girls. Yeah, that 70s. I figured this because there is a huge winding counter with little spinning stools. This is what would be offered at the older diners. There are also bright green lights on the outside and green slipcovers for the booths. No, the restaurant isnt outdated - thats its real atmosphere.
The restaurant was very crowded and there was a ten minute wait both mornings we went. There were only five chairs to sit at while waiting which were located in a corner. Menus were given out to those who asked. Since the restaurant was so crowded, it was almost impossible to hear Brown Sugar by the Rolling Stones which was playing from the jukebox.
Besides the spinning stools at the counter (about 20), there are also booths to dine at. There are three rows of booths, and six or seven booths in one row. I also noticed 2-people tables, but there wasnt anything for larger parties. The restaurant was fairly clean, and the bathrooms were spotless. In the bathroom, there were also automatic soap dispensers and automatic faucets....ooo....getting high-class Newport Creamery?
Dining
I will only talk about breakfast items since I never did see the lunch or dinner menus. You cant find the breakfast menu on NewportCreamery.com
The menu offers such a huge amount of items for breakfast. Beverages include the usual - hot chocolate, milk, apple juice, orange juice, coffee or tea. I found a side of bacon for $2.25 to be a rip-off. Since my meal didnt come with bacon, I decided to order some and only got three pieces for that price.
There are also Belgian Waffles which are a bit pricier than the other items. The different types of omelettes such as the ham & cheese looked very good in the pictures. There is also a cheese omelet with diced tomatoes if you would like. Eggs can also be ordered any way you would like them.
There are also pancakes. Blueberry pancaked are just 40 cents more. You can choose whichever amount of pancakes you would like - two, three, or four with syrup and a chunk of butter at the top. There are also deals with eggs, bacon, and juice for a certain amount. I was tempted to try the Belgian Waffle and blueberry pancake combo for around $6.
On one morning I ordered an egg combo. It came with two eggs, two pieces of buttered toast and home fries. I ordered the eggs over-easy because I like to dip the toast a lot. There was so much to dip that I had to order another side of toast for $.99 just to finish it. It was very well cooked. The toast was a bit thin, and the home I thought I was going to throw up the home fries. Come to think of it - they were actually red potatoes with a million pounds of garlic and grease on them.
On the second morning, I ordered the 3-pancake combo. I must say those pancakes were huge. They were stacked up with a slice of butter at the top. I was given the syrup to pour on. The pancakes were very well cooked and well presented in a large plate. It didnt come with any sides and the price was a bit high.
Service
On the first morning we dined, we had a friendly young woman who took our orders promptly and delivered our food quickly. However, she wasnt a waitress who would welcome us with open arms, smiling non-stop and making jokes.
The next morning when we came, she saw us. I could read her mind...
Oh no, not them again.
I could tell she was relieved when we werent seated in her section. Haha.
Once we were seated, we sat there for about ten minutes...waiting...waiting...waiting...hello? Finally, a waitress came and didnt even apologize for the slow service. Before she came to the table for the first time, she went to the booth next to ours who came five minutes after us! The service was a lot slower that day, and Im sure our waitress was confused by the $1.50 tip.
Conclusion
I would recommend Newport Creamery. The extensive breakfast menu offers food for any type of taste buds. For example, kids would enjoy the different types of eggs, and I know kids often have a liking for pancakes. Belgian Waffles would be good on anyones plate, right? The service was quick one day, slow the other. Newport Creamery is clean and has a unique atmosphere. So I would recommend eating there for breakfast, but it wouldnt be my first choice.
