Pros: Moisturizing - makes a distinct difference in a matter of days!
Cons: Salon Shampoo - a bit pricier (but worth every penny!)
When my long locks suddenly became dry and frizzy recently, I went to one of our Category Leads in the Beauty Section, Shantel575, and I asked her for her top recommendation for a shampoo and conditioner.
She pointed me to the Nexxus products created specifically for dry hair, and eventually I saved my pennies and bought some of the Therappe Moisturizing Shampoo and the Humectress Conditioner.
In a matter of DAYS, my hair was restored to its original softness and shine, and only in the past week did I discover that I actually had more than dry weather going against me - my thyroid was hyperactive (just like me!). This should encourage any of you who take medications or whose hair is suffering as a result of medical reasons - you don't NEED to have brittle, dry locks just because your condition may be tough on hair! This shampoo (and the conditioner, which I RAVE about in another review I shall note below) is a miracle worker for dry, damaged hair - even if the cause is biological in nature.
Nexxus Therappe Moisturizing Shampoo - Made of What?
Let's start off with a list of ingredients. Notice the Avocado Oil and Honey! There are a lot of ingredients that you probably won't be able to pronounce, but this isn't always a bad thing. I can assure you from my use of this shampoo that this is not a typical grocery store moisturizing product that simply weighs the hair down with lots of GLOP and eventually your hair gets so flat and lifeless you end up not using it!
Ingredients: Aqueous Extracts of Matricaria, Nettle, Rosemary, Quillaja Saponaria, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Keratin Amino Acids, Panthenol, Avocado Oil, Allantoin, Glycine Soja Sterol, Honey, Ceramide 3, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Flour Lipids, Polyquaternium 10, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Alpha Glucan Oligosaccharide, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Butyl Methoxydibenzoyl Methane, Styrene/Methacrylic Acid/Itaconic Acid Polymer, Myristic Acid, Palamitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Magnesium Citrate, Sodium Chloride, Polyglyceryl 3 Distearate, Polysorbate 60, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Citric Acid, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Methylparaben, Fragrance
Since fragrance is listed last, let me tell you that if you are sensitive to strong smelling scents, you will have no problem with Therappe. I had to lean close in to even smell anything! I would say it smells like a Virgin Pina Colada. (alcohol free!)
What Does This Product Claim It Will Do For Hair?
From the bottle (bolding mine):
"Therappe Luxury Moisturizing Shampoo restores and maintains vital moisture needed for dry, brittle hair to be naturally soft, pliable and radiantly healthy.
Encapsulated Lipids, Avocado Oil and Polysaccharides attach to hair to bind moisture and provide time released hydration.
Lively whipped bubbles along with a nourishing botanical blend of Allantoin, Chamomile, Rosemary, Nettle and Nature's own gentle cleanser, Soapbark, adds incredible softness.
These unique ingredients and lubricating Emollients linger in the hair long after the super rich lather is gone. You will notice the difference in just one shampoo.
Fortified With NexxuSpheres?. Advanced technology provides the gradual release of hair strengthening Ceramides, replenishing Nutrients, Antioxidants and UV protectors. A Nexxus exclusive, this breakthrough, time release feature gives hair sustained health, softness and radiance."
Notice that the bubbles are described as "lively" and "whipped". Now if you ask me, I just don't care about how much a shampoo lathers up. This is because I have used detergent-free shampoos in the past such as Aubrey Organics that don't lather up at ALL. And truthfully, I think Therappe has the consistency of a thick pudding and have never noticed how well it suds up. Maybe it's just my bottle!
Is the Therapy EFFECTIVE?
Oh yes! Now my hair was so incredibly dry that it took more than one shampoo for me to tell a difference. I would say it took about three days worth of use. And if you are REALLY wanting results, you absolutely must try the Nexxus Humectress Conditioner.
How Do You Use It?
The one difference in this shampoo that I feel some might have a problem with is that you leave it on the scalp and hair for three minutes. You use it much like a conditioner, since it IS a conditioning shampoo. However, I find my hair is fully cleansed with only one shampoo, so your shower time isn't really affected that much! I use this shampoo daily since my scalp is quite a generous oil producer (yet my hair is STILL so dry!!). I have not experienced any further drying from daily use.
Here are the directions for use from the bottle.
"Apply shampoo to moistened hair. Massage into hair and scalp. Leave in 3 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water."
I'm CONVINCED! Where Do I Buy This Stuff?
Well if you are like me, you will buy it from www.drugstore.com and pay $9.99 for a 13.5 fl. oz bottle. HOWEVER, since this is a Salon Exclusive Product, Nexxus has a disclaimer on Drugstore.com's website as follows.
Attention customers: Nexxus Products Co. cannot guarantee the authenticity of any product sold by an unauthorized retailer such as drugstore.com. Nexxus Products Co. states that its products are guaranteed only when sold through professional salons. If the UPC codes or other tracing codes are missing from any product container of a Nexxus Products Co. product purchased by you, please retain your purchase receipt to assist in the tracing of that product in the unlikely event it is defective.
I can tell you that the consistency of this shampoo is very thick and it is translucent in color and smells like a Virgin Pina Colada. Other than that, you're on your own if you purchase Nexxus or any salon products from Drugstore.com or your local drugstore/grocery chain.
The best, most guaranteed place to buy Humectress is at a local Salon near you (call ahead to see if a particular Salon carries Nexxus).
I thought of recommending the www.nexxusproducts.com's website Salon finder to you, but I found it quite annoying since the website has a lengthy Flash intro and when I clicked on "skip intro" it seemed to ignore me and I STILL had to wait! I also used their Salon Locator and put in my 5 digit zip code which told me "There are NO SALONS that match your criteria." HA! I live near Downtown Portland, Oregon and TRUST ME, there are plenty of Salons in my zip code! I then searched by City and was given a much better selection. Here's a better suggestion from the website: "For a Nexxus Salon near you, call 1-800-444-6399."
Conclusion: Get Therappe Therapy!
I hope you will be helped by this review, and I encourage you to check out the other reviews on this product as well. Remember - for a sure fire way to revitalize dry, brittle hair, you really should consider getting the Humectress Moisturizer also by Nexxus. I wanted to clarify that I have used the Therappe and the Humectress TOGETHER as a system and so the results I have gotten need to be credited to both products. Here is the URL for my review on the Humectress. Cut and paste it into your browser if you are interested. If you don't have time, here's a summary: I LOVED IT!
