Pros: Easy and natural to use, partial success...
Cons: Not enough to make me stop, not its fault :-)
The Bottom Line: From friends trying to stop by other means, I see this is a good as other replacement therapies (patches, gums), not better. What you need most is WILLPOWER !

| morgat's Full Review: Nicotrol Inhaler |
Yes I smoke, running marathons, non- smoking wife, new father and all !
Stupidity has no limit...
And I've been smoking for quite a looong time, about 25 years now...
Notice the present tense : Nicotrol Inhaler was my first ever try to stop hurting myself, and it did not completely work.
Although my cigarette consumption has sharply fallen from 25 a day to 2 on average, with many "Zero cigarette days" in between, I'm now getting to the bottom of my last box of inhaler cartridges, and realize that I haven't really stopped.
I began the treatment in early August this year, for a bunch of very good reasons ( health, money, family etc...) and because it was offered to me.
I would have tried it anyway, the device is appealing and the price is not a real obstacle when compared to the price of cigarettes in Europe. The treatment's cost is about the same as what I paid for tobacco.
What is it ?
The well-named Inhaler is a system enabling its user to inhale nicotine. It is composed of a mouth piece and nicotine cartridges. When the craving comes ( and it does come !), you put a cartridge in the mouthpiece and voila ! you are sucking a smoke and tar-free cigarette, and looking funny with this white mouthpiece in your mouth.
You are supposed to stop smoking, replacing cigarettes with this mouthpiece, in 12 weeks.
During the first eight you use as many cartridges as you need, normally from 6 to 12 a day, gradually needing less cartridges until at the end of the twelve weeks, your habit has changed so much that you don't need anything anymore.
The good
It's a simple cigarette replacement, you still have an object to use when you choose, to keep in your hand or in your mouth, that famous hand - to - mouth habit.
It's a good response to sudden cravings that you get often when trying to stop smoking.
It's not more expensive than cigarettes, and much better for your health.
Unlike patches, you choose to have your nicotine dose when you need it most, not continually during the day. It is nearer to gums.
At worst, it helps keeping down the number of cigarettes you smoke.
The bad
Jokes about what you may have in your mouth...
Taste is a bad surprise, supposed to be menthol but feels quite awful at first, you can get used to it.
This is due partly to taste, but I was never able to use the minimum recommended number of cartridges a day. The most I have used is 4, when 6 is a recommended minimum, and I should have used many more considering my previous cigarette consumption.
Having taken too much cartridges one day in the beginning, I even experienced some kind of cramps and skeletal pain which they say can happen if you "over dose".
The use, gesture and object may be too near using cigarettes, you only partially forget your old habit without completely repplacing it.
Next step
All in all, I have not stopped after a twelve weeks treatment, but I smoke a lot less, which is not good, but less bad :-)
But the device did what it could, only my will to stop was not strong enough, and I was too easily tempted when at parties and social gatherings where I met smokers.
Nicotine replacement therapy may not really be what I need, it keeps the nicotine need alive, and progressively weakening it doesn't work for my kind of behavior.
The need to stop smoking is still there, so I'll try the next new method : Zyban (bupropion), a different kind of treatment, without nicotine replacement, based on a anti-depressor molecule. This is supposed to stop your brain's need for micotine, and pleasure from it. I'll tell you about it in a few month...
This is a much bigger addiction that I first thought ! I need much more commitment to this than I had before.
