G'day Brian!
Well, shock-horror-probe, I've never read the short story! (One of the other reviews said no self-respecting sci-fi fan could possibly not have... oh well... he was wrong!)
It's a good read, not truly classic sci-fi, but I enjoyed it all the same. Pitch Black (I hear there's a sequel coming put - goody!) is different in that the crew of a space ship crash-land on the planet and slowly find out what is about to happen, and what happened to the previous inhabitants... in Nightfall, of course, the inhabitants are all there to start with...
If you've never seen Pitch Black, I'd advise it. It made number 7 on my all-time Top Ten Sci-Fi Films list! - http://www.epinions.com/content_3603931268
G'night,
Dave

long dark tea-time of the civilization (Reply to this comment)

Interesting. I recall the short story, which i liked; I don't recall ever thinking "Boy! I wish this was longer and had twice as many authors!". At the same time, if it does, that doesn't sound so horrible. (What's Pitch Black's angle?)
good night,
- Brian
