Nik-L-Nips: Possibly The Most Useless Candy Ever Made

Pros:Novelty product, lots of wax, syrupy liquid, inexpensive.
Cons:I still don't understand the point of them.
The Bottom Line: It's not just wax, its refined wax.

In the world of candy there are instantly recognizable products. It doesn't matter if you are talking about candy bars, seasonal treats or novelty items – there are some that simply stand out from the rest of the pack. The Nik-L-Nips are one of those oddball products that make you wonder "What the hell was someone thinking when they came up with the idea for this?" Along with Swedish Fish, candy buttons, Satellite Wafers and Fun Dip – these were things that I saw as a kid but never really got to indulge in until I was older. I can almost guarantee that if you are over the age of thirty and see a pack of these in the store you will let out a little giggle. While rather pointless unless you like chewing on wax they are a true candy classic.
One thing you need to know before you start biting the tops off the bottles is that when you get the pack the bottles are connected. You need to break them apart carefully because if you don't you are going to end up with a leaker and that can cause a huge mess. Likewise, these are made of wax [duh] so they need some special attention in the summer months so they don't melt or get super soft and end up leaking. This is something that out local Family Dollar gets in stock every month or so. For whatever reason they are a fast seller so when I see them I get a couple packages for one of the guys who has braces. It's better to get them when they are in stock even if he doesn’t need them than to have him ask for them and them not be in stock. I'm partial to the blue / berry ones but have tried the other colors / flavors but can’t say that any of them appealed to me.
Each of the bottles have a different flavor to them; you aren't getting a lot of liquid in them so don't count on these to quench your thirst. The wax bottled beverage is thick so you either have to squeeze it or suck on it to get it out. None of the flavors really stand out as exceptional except the blue / berry but one of the lighter colored ones that I thought would be an orange flavor tasted exactly like coconut which made me almost instantly gag. The packs have colors that range from blue and pink to orange and yellow. The taste, as mentioned, isn’t all that great but there isn't a lot to it so it isn’t that big of a deal.
The wax that encases the liquid is not flavored but you can pick up a little bit of flavoring if you start chewing the bottle without getting all the liquid out of it. There's really no pointing buying these if you aren't going to chew the wax. Yeah, that almost sounds fun. As odd as it is, there is some strange fascination with them; when I grabbed a couple packs of this almost every person in line made a comment about how they used to eat them when they were a kid or that they hadn't seen them in years. I bought them for the wax and that's about it. One of the guys at the shop has braces and asked me if I would pick up some wax for him. In hindsight I really need to stop saying, "I'm going to the store, need anything?" because these are the things I am asked to get. Even so, these are one of the wax products he uses when he gets cuts or blisters from them.
Nutritionally there isn't a lot to the Nik-L-Nips. A serving is five bottles and there's nothing in them except 5 grams of carbohydrates. I have to assume that the calories and carbohydrates include only the liquid portion and not the wax. You can chew it, you can suck on it, you can even use it for your braces but I don't suggest actually eating it. I am sure there are people that do eat them but I could think of about a hundred other things I'd want to swallow before this would even make it on the list.
