rookshark's Full Review: Nike Air Max Moto+ 5 Wide Running Shoe for Men
I was writing my review of the ASICS Kinsei, when I noticed that there was no review for the Air Max Moto+ IV, which I could not allow to pass.
I picked these shoes up after sending back my defective Nike Air Max 360. Nike gave me a gift certificate, and I picked up these and a pair of Pegasus for the same price as one pair of the 360s. So far so good, the price was right. Regular retail I believe on these was $85.00 maybe more.
I basically wanted a long distance, comfortable shoe for my natural gait, normal to underpronating frame. I have been taken with ASICS in the past few years, really being disappointed with Nikes ability to compete, except for their Bowerman series shoes. Guess what this shoe is part of that series. As such, they focus on what is important and not on aesthetics . looking at the shoe will not elicit any ooohs or aaahs, my version being white leather with white mesh, some black highlights and a blue Swoosh and other highlights. It is not much to look at (not ugly though by any stretch) but definitely gets the job done.
I replaced the stock insoles with replacement insoles, put them on, and from the first wearing to the last a few days ago have been pleasantly surprised. The cushioning was surprisingly good air Pegasus or Gel Nimbus good. To the point where I used these for mini-marathon use. I think that speaks volumes to not only the cushioning, but also the weight and long term comfort. These really did live up to any other running shoe I have had.
Max cushioning is in the heel and zoom air in the forefoot. I was initially skeptical at the zoom air for cushioning my big frame, but it was not an issue and worked very well. Like running on clouds, pillows, whatever soft analogy we would like to make.
I never had the slightest hint of the shoes being unstable or needing anything extra, so they have done something right in that area as well. The outsole has worn exceptionally well, with no real wear issues or things falling apart. Durable enough for use well past when they are hung up from hard core running.
I never used the touted + feature of this shoe, which connects to an Ipod provided the additional equipment is purchased. It seems like a fine enough idea, but I already have a mp3 player. If you are curious how the feature works, you insert the purchased component to your midsole of your shoe under the insole, and magically that communicates with your Ipod.
These shoes though were enough to maintain my faith in Nikes ability to produce quality running shoes. The shoes feel great from the first wearing, and have lasted a good 500 miles worth of running with no perceivable wear problems or issues. They proved to be so good that I ended up using them in more than one 13.1 mile mini-marathon, with no complaints. The shoes were so good they became an afterthought. Shoes so good you forget about them that is a testament to them. If you can get a pair, do so.
