Technical Specifications...
The outersole of the Nike Air Max Tailwind 5 is made of BRS 1000 (carbon rubber). Carbon rubber is the most durable material used on the bottom of running shoes. The midsole is made of a softer polyurethane than previous years. Polyurethane is the most durable material used in the midsoles of running shoes. There is a large volume Tuned Air unit in the heel and an Air-sole unit in the forefoot. Tuned Air technology uses small hemispheres of varying thicknesses to provide “tuned “ support where it is most needed. There are four tuned air hemispheres along the medial post to prevent overpronation. In addition, plastic runs through the midsole and along some of the upper to provide even more support. The upper is almost completely mesh making the Tailwind very breathable.
Value...
The Nike Air Max Tailwind 5 costs about 120 dollars. The shoe is worth the price for a serious runner. The shoe is great for running or casual.
Bottom Line
The Nike Air Max Tailwind 5 is a significant improvement over the Tailwind IV and it is ten times better than the disgraceful Nike Air Tuned Sirocco. The Tuned Air allows for a lower ride than the previous model without sacrificing cushioning. The Tailwind 5 is also much more breathable than its predecessor is. The only negative aspect is on the fashion end, the paint chips off the midsole relatively quickly.
