Every time I heard the song "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls, I thoughtto myself that I would never be able to run. For years my ankle pronated severely, and after going to a podiatrist, I was told that I had chronic Achilles tendinitis from my ankles pronating. I ordered custom orthotics. I also had big goals in mind. Ever since I was a teenager, I was unable to run. After running just feet, my ankles would start to burn. Therefore, my workouts consisted only of weights, and no cardiovascular exercises.
I knew that I wanted to run, and in order to run, I would have to find the perfect shoes for myself. The shoes were to have a one-two punch with my orthotics. Unfortunately, shoes that would give me what I needed were a bit pricey. In the end I narrowed my search to three shoes... The Nike Air Structure Triax 10, Saucony Grid Hurricane 8, and New Balance M992. I decided to purchase the Nike Air Structure Triax 10 and have not looked back since!
-PRICE-
If you are a very serious runner, then you will most likely be looking into more expensive shoes. I used to have $40 New Balance shoes (I got rid of them and do not remember the model number), and you simply can not compare them to the higher-end running shoes. I also noticed that most mid- to low-range shoes do NOT offer removable insoles. This is very important for me since I am using custom orthotics.
The Nike Air Structure Triax 10 cost $89.95 MSRP. Out of the shoes that I tried out, they were by far the cheapest. But compared to indiscriminately buying shoes, they are far more expensive than shoes you can purchase for ~$40 or so. The other shoes that I looked at were the Saucony Grid Hurricane 8, which were $124.95 MSRP but readily available on eBay for $40! I also looked at the New Balance M992 which were also $124.95, and was unable to locate them for a lower price online.
I tried out the Saucony Grid Hurricane 8 but they just didn't have the right fit. Even if I were to purchase them for $40 on eBay, I still would not have had the exact comfort that I was looking for. As for now, the New Balance M992 is still out of my price range, but I will probably look into them for my next shoes.
The Nike Air Structure Triax 10 pack a lot of features for less than the Saucony or New Balance shoes. The Nike Air Structure Triax 10 is a very well constructed and good looking shoe. They provide excellent support for my arch, and most importantly my ankle. The shoe has removable insoles, and orthotics slide in well. I had trouble inserting orthotics in my test pair of the Sauconys, and with the Nike Air Structure Triax 10 I had no problems.
Nike claims that the shoe has a lot of technology at work. Here is an exert taken from Nike.com:
Prone to over-pronation? Support and protect your foot with the Nike Structure Triax 10 Wide, a wide-foot-specific men's running shoe dedicated to high-performance comfort and cushioning. A heel Air-Sole unit, a forefoot Zoom Air unit, and a PU crash pad provide premium shock absorption and cushioning, leaving your heel and arch healthy and supported throughout the footstrike.
I am unfamiliar with what the technology is and what it means. This is my first pair of running shoes since I was unable to run until now. But let me tell you this, the shoes allow me to run. They allow me to run well. I no longer feel any pain, and they work great with my orthotics. I have put miles on the shoe with absolutely NO problems!
-THE FEEL-
I once had someone tell me that when you buy a shoe, especially for athletic activities, you need to buy a shoe that will "fit" you perfectly. Since I am using orthotics, I could no longer pick a low to mid-range shoe, but this high-end shoe feels much better for me and my foot than the more expensive Saucony Grid Hurricane 8 that I tried on.
Of course, all feet are different. So you may try the shoe on, and absolutely hate it. But the Nike Air Structure Triax 10 offers excellent support for my foot. Even without orthotics, the shoe is supposed to help anyone with an ankle that pronates. With orthotics, my feet have very firm support (yes, the shoe is rigid) which keep the ankles from sinking. When running though, I feel great. The shoes hug my feet, and do everything that they are supposed to do. Another very neat thing that I love about the shoes is the mesh front. I can actually feel the air flowing and ventilating my feet as I run. When it comes to working out in the gym, the shoes provide firm support and I feel no ankle pain after doing exercises like the leg press or squats. I don't know how else to describe the feeling, but the shoes feel great. If you do have problems like ankle pronation, or wear custom orthotics, you should look into these shoes.
-DURABILITY-
So far I have put many miles on the shoes, and they are in great shape. My only complaint is the lack of color variation. I really would have preferred a darker shoe because if you get mud on the shoe, it will look very dirty due to its light color. The shoes are dirt magnets, but it's nothing that some soap and water can't get rid of. Otherwise, the shoe has been great, and I have had no problems regarding its durability.
-OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER-
The Nike Air Structure Triax 10 allows you to use the Nike pedometer that links up with your iPod Nano. I do not use this, nor do I use a pedometer at all. But if you are a very serious runner, own an iPod Nano, and would want to use the Nike system, then you should check these shoes out since they are capable of using the system.
-CONCLUSION-
I found the Nike Air Structure Triax 10 to be a perfect fit for me. They provide my foot with the firm support it needs. I use the shoes with orthotics, so please keep this in mind. I can not promise you that they will be a perfect fit for you. That's why you should look into other shoes too, such as shoes from Saucony, New Balance, and other reputable brands. Nonetheless, the Nike Air Structure Triax 10 incorporate nice features that make this into a great running shoe. I have gone from not being able to run, to being able to run miles! The Nike Air Structure Triax 10 works very well with custom orthotics if you wear them. So on days when I feel like running, I will throw these on, and sing to myself... "And I ran, I ran so far away, I just ran, I ran all night and day."
I also currently own the New Balance M992 running shoes that I now use for outdoor conditions, you can read the review here.
