sparkospunky's Full Review: Nike Power Distance Super Far Golf Balls 1 Dozen
The Nike Power Distance Soft golf ball is advertised to do what most of the other two piece balls claim to do--maximize distance while at the same time giving the mid to high handicapper pro-type feathery feel around and on the green. The truth is that this ball performs somewhere in the middle of the pack when compared to other two piece balls. I received a box of these balls for placing in a tournament earlier this month, so rather than let them languish in my golf bag for months, I decided to give them a try, even though I've pretty much settled on the Top Flite Gamer as my current ball of choice.
The Nike Power Distance Soft golf ball has a soft isomer cover and a lower compression core. This combination is designed, according to Nike, to give the golfer greater distance while at the same time improving touch on approach shots and on the green. The ball is emblazoned with the Nike Swoosh logo, and the word SOFT is written in green on the nugget. I could not detect any special dimple design on the ball, and there was nothing in particular to distinguish it from other balls other than the Nike logo.
I really noticed no appreciable gain in distance with my driver when I teed off with the Nike Power Distance Soft golf ball. What I did notice was a lower trajectory which enhanced my roll and drives that seemed to fly just a little bit straighter. I don't think there was much backspin with this ball, but sidespin was less, which kept my drives from fading off into no man's land.
This ball reacted much the same with my fairway metals and long irons. Trajectory was lower, and my shots flew pretty straight for the most part. I was able to get pretty close to some targets that were usually unreachable for me because the lack of sidespin kept me from being robbed of a little distance. The downside was that I was beginning to detect just a bit of a lack of feel with my fairway metals and long irons, because the distance was just a little unpredictable, due to the roll.
Short irons and wedges were where this ball really failed me. The lower trajectory and lack of backspin removed any hope of a drop and stop shot. After seeing a few of my shots hit near the hole and scuttle well past it, I realized that I had better adapt my game to a bump and run so I could make it through the round with any hope of beating my handicap. There was little or no feel imparted to me when I struck this ball with a wedge, and I really had no idea whether I had hit a solid shot or not.
Surprisingly, the ball rolled pretty nicely off the face of the putter. I really didn't get much feedback other than a sharp click when I struck the ball, but the Nike Power Distance Soft golf ball held the line extremely well. I guess that's a good thing, because I had a lot of long putts that day, simply because I couldn't get the ball very close to the hole.
The Nike Power Distance Soft Golf Ball is really just another two piece ball. There are other two piece balls on the market that perform just as well or better, like the Top Flite D2 Feel golf ball. You'll do much better with it, and it's cheaper too.
