| mht's Full Review: Nikko Bali Resort And Spa |
Perched on the beach, the Nikko Bali is a gem of a hotel on the well-known island of Bali. It was our best lodging choice on our honeymoon. The "breakfast" is an ample feast that easily serves as a brunch. Every employee we came across rendered fine service. Overall, this is a great place to stay in Bali--the best out of the ones we tried.
Pool & Beach
The Nikko Bali has a large pool which is right next to the beach. The pool/beach complex offers plenty of reclining chairs to lounge around in. On the beach, there are a number of different folks who will try to sell you water sports deals. If you're into water sports, take your pick of quite a number of choices.
I unfortunately hurt my foot in a freak accident and the doc said to keep the foot dry. This happened just on the day I was about to try parasailing for the first time! So all my water sports dreams were dunked for this whole trip.
If your room has a view of the beach--as the rooms generally do--it is a sight worth drinking in. It is without doubt a strong point of this place.
Breakfast & Other Feasts
The breakfast has loads of fruit like papaya and passionfruit (which we loaded up on), crisp bacon, multiple drinks, and mounds of other appealing choices. We found that quantity didn't diminish the quality. We literally made a point of making it our brunch each day we were there, and we didn't tire of it because of the extensive selection of fine picks.
We also tried the Japanese restaurant for our final dinner, which was quite good albeit expensive. The sushi was generously cut, fresh and tasty.
There is also another restaurant with an open structure. The food there was fairly well done, and if you have leftovers, you can toss them to roaming cats. We are witnesses that these cats will eat the fish--bones and all--quite thoroughly!
Service
We had no complaints about the service. They all seemed well-trained, courteous, knowledgable and competent. Of the 3 places we stayed in Bali, the service here was far and away the best. They try to be flexible and accommodating without seeming too solicitous or intrusive.
One can pay more for massages, spa treatment, etc. at the hotel. We, however, didn't get such treatment there--so it wouldn't make sense to comment apart from letting you know there is a variety of different courses one can choose from. It is worth mentioning that high quality but lesser price massage & spa treatments are available outside of this hotel context.
Facilities
The room we stayed in was quite satisfactory. The balcony provided a refreshing view of the beach and pool. The bed is comfortable.
The walkways are often open structures--providing yet another opportunity for the Nikko to flaunt the views. The views were nice enough to merit several pictures on our camera. The open structure also allows the breeze to waft in.
The lobby area and other common areas have been tastefully made. They reflect both native flavor as well as some Japanese influence as well (it's not called Nikko for nothing).
Price
The price, especially if you go through a place or way that gives a discount like we did, is not anywhere close to being as prohibitive as a comparable place in the U.S. or Western Europe. After all, the prices in Bali are generally bargains. To give you some idea, McDonald's is considered a fancy restaurant there!
Worthy of a Honeymoon
Our only regret about the Nikko was not staying there longer. On the other hand, the prior place we stayed at made us appreciate the Nikko Bali all the more. It was the climax location of our honeymoon and it has left a very good taste in our mouths. Someday, perhaps on a special anniversary, I would be delighted to whisk my wife Sarah away over there again!
