Pros: Clear, sharp, fast, colorful with plenty of contrast and shadow detail.
Cons: Expensive, but I don't care because it's actually worth it.
The Bottom Line: I could have saved a lot of time and money if I bought this first.

I have been using a Nikon AF 28-105D with adequate results. I use it on 3 Nikon AF bodies, 1 film and 2 digital. After using it for over five years, the only problem I ever had was with auto focus. I ended up getting a Nikon AFS 24-85 f/3.5-4.5G after reading a lot of positive reviews. Although this lens was noticeably sharper, lighter and less clunky than the 28-105, it still exhibits auto focus errors with all three camera bodies, just not as frequently. What I consider an auto focus error is when a full, bright scene with plenty of light and contrast appears perfectly focused when shot but, when processed or viewed digitally something far off in the background is the only thing actually in focus. When I focus manually I don't have this problem. Manual focus is pain on the G because the focus ring is in the wrong place.
Although I have created some nice images with both lenses they just did not provide what I would consider world class or professional sharpness & contrast over the entire range of focal length and apertures. So it decided to try the coveted Nikon AF 35-70 F/2.8D.
Wow! This lens is up there with the 50mm f/1.8 AIS and the AF20-35 f/2.8D. Clear, sharp, fast, colorful with plenty of contrast and shadow detail. Auto focus is also as fast and accurate as is gets. I cant believe just how good this lens is.
The fact that it stays focused while zooming is really nice. It reminds me a lot of the Nikon 75-150 f/3.5E (which also has a cult following).
Conclusion. Dont waste your time and money on the latest hype, buy the Nikon AF 35-70 f/2.8D! Youll love it.
Nikon, keep making this lens or better yet make one thats has more focal range with all of the same great characteristics.
