Good review (Reply to this comment)

You have an overall good review here. I wouldn't, however, agree that f/2.8 is that big of an issue with macro photography, as the depth of field is so razor-thin as to basically limit the use of a macro lens to controlled (i.e. at least tripod-only and usually indoor) conditions. More often than not, I'm stopping down to at *least* f/5.6 to get any kind of reasonable depth of field (the background is still obscured at this aperture).
It's interesting to read the varied comments about the build quality of autofocus lenses, the 60mm in particular. I find this to be one of the most solid of Nikon's non "crinkle" (professional-grade) glass. In any case, the build quality will be more than adequite for about 98 to 99 percent of the market for this particular optic.

Good review of a great product! (Reply to this comment)

No doubt this is a good lens for many who are venturing out into digital SLR photography but for oldtimers like myself it was a tough decision to give up the 55mm f/2.8. In the end I stuck with the 55mm and decided to continue with the macro work from my favourite lens.
Cheers
