cole12885's Full Review: Nikon COOLPIX S1 Digital Camera
I owned a Sony Cyber-shot for one year before purchasing the Nikon. (The Sony was stolen.) Instead of going with my instinct to buy a Sony, knowing it was a good camera, my eye was stolen by the size of the Nikon. The Nikon is a great-looking camera with a large screen (2-1/2 inches).
Cons:
The time it takes to take a picture is incredibly slow! Each time you take a pic it must recharge the flash and it takes around 5-10 seconds, which makes it difficult when catching an action.
If you want a camera with decent zoom, this probably isn't a good choice for you. This camera has a 3x zoom and 4x digital. Using the digital zoom lessens the picture quality somewhat. I'm a college student and use my camera mostly for shots at parties and of my family and friends, so I wasn't too concerned with zoom.
The movie mode has terrible resolution on this camera. Everything looks fuzzy and dark and I don't think it automatically focuses on the subject.
There is no viewfinder besides the LCD, which may bother some people, but doesn't bother me too much.
The size of the camera makes it difficult to get a shot without shaking the camera. Even though there is a hand that shows up on screen when the camera shakes, it doesn't always appear and many photos come out fuzzy, which the large LCD still doesn't allow you to catch on the camera.
The picture quality is pretty good. This camera is a 5.1 megapixel, the same as my Sony, so I was assuming the picture quality would be the same. It is very close, but the Sony was better. Also, there is a yellow-tone to the pictures, especially is you use the automatic corrective feature, (D-Lighting). I recommend not to use this feature, because a couple pics I printed made my nieces blond hair look almost green.
The battery life isn't great, but it's not terrible, either. Viewing pics really drains it, so try to limit that.
Pros:
Obviously the size of the camera and it's screen and it's weight.
The picture quality is very good, even though not quite as good as my Sony was.
The features on this camera are very impressive. It has 17 shooting modes, including fireworks, museum, beach/snow, sunset, underwater, etc. Another neat feature is the camera's ability to find a face in the picture you are about to take and illuminate it more so than the background.
