had my CP5000 for over a year now... (Reply to this comment)
by bob_tomato
and I have to say that it is easily the best camera my wife and I have ever owned. My biggest complaint with it is the placement of the flash sensor - my finger often covers it while shooting - I would think that Nikon could just move it to the other side of the camera to solve this problem.
we purchased it before a trip to Europe, knowing that our previous trip had cost us over $300 in film processing - so the $1000 price tag made sense (we take a lot of pictures) I would guess that we have already covered the cost of the camera, and we are really happy with the picture quality. Even some of my hopelessly amateur shots came out looking like they were taken by someone who actually knows something about photography!
Thanks for the detailed information - you taught me some things I didn't know about my camera!

I have joined the camera race and was deciding on what camera to buy, as you would normally do, decided to read the reviews. Coolpix 5000 came up trumps. I went for it nad have been prety impressed. I have made further purchases of accessories (Optional lens, flashgun you name it) I think I have made the right choice till I use some other model, hope not.

easy to use? (Reply to this comment)

How easy is it to use this camera? I want a camera I can "mess around with", but that my wife can just point and click.

I think this camera sucks (Reply to this comment)
by hed1117
• Flash sensor in totally wrong place - easily obstructed by fingers gripping the camera as designed.
• LCD screen is DARK! I had read this prior to purchasing the camera but I thought surely it would be AT LEAST as bright as the screen on my 880... boy, was I wrong. This camera is USELESS for low light photography.
• "No shutter lag"? True, the camera shoots quickly - then it takes 5-10 seconds to process the picture.
I had to buy a new camera because my Coolpix 880 died due to the infamous "system error". I bought (and sold) a Canon G2 because I found it too heavy , ergonomically uncomfortable, and I missed the "quick review" feature on the Coolpix.
I was going to try the Coolpix 995 but I decided to order the more advanced Coolpix 5000.
I can't stand this camera (see above).

Hmm, maybe a digital camera is the way to go... (Reply to this comment)

After my SLR was stolen last year (and the insurance company refused to pay), I've been camera-less for months. I've been looking for a new camera, thinking I would get an SLR and a digital for those 'family shots'. But it sounds like this could be a good combo.
Thanks for the well-written and very thorough review (as always).

A great birthday present! (Reply to this comment)
by daloosh
Hi Howard,
Thanks for those great side-by-side comparisons. Actually, today is my birthday and just this morning my wife said she was getting me a Coolpix 5000! My fears are a) I will not like it and feel the grand was wasted or b) I'll like it too much and mothball the F-100s. But, it sounds like neither fear will be realized; I'll use the 5000 for everyday events and some "prosumer" work, and stay with film for more demanding things like travel/journalism/portraiture.
Later,
Daloosh

Jam Packed Full of Information (Reply to this comment)

Again Howard you have done a superb job of reviewing another digital camera. It's always nice reading your reviews because you include information that professional and serious hobbyists like to know. Much of what I write is based on impressions of others but as always you continue to set the standard to which all other reviews should be written too.
