| pippadaisy's Full Review: Nilo Multi-Use Train Table |
When our older kids were tiny babies, my sister and I often compared notes on baby products trying to find the best thing for our kids. In some cases, I got things I ended up hating (like the horrible Peg Perego Prima Pappa High Chair, but when it came time for Santa to get my boys a train table, I knew that there was no other table but the Nilo Multi-Use Train Table.
::: Train Table Basics :::
The Nilo Multi-Use Train Table is somewhat unique in the world of train tables. Measuring 34.25" long x 50.25" wide x 20" high with a play surface 48&frac;1/2" long x 32" wide, it features a two-side melamine top for easy cleaning. The sides are slim and actually allows children to sit while playing (something that many of the other tables prevent). It has a raised edge to keep toys from falling off, smooth rounded edges to prevent injuries, and is made of solid hardwood.
Best of all, the Nilo Multi-Use Train Table is compatible with all Brio and Thomas (and compatible) train sets, as well as LEGO, and features holes in the table edges for the exclusive Nilo-Jax, which are pieces that allow you to build multi-level track configurations which reach over the edges of the table.
As your children grown, Nilo also offers a 24" leg extender kit to raise the height of your Nilo Multi-Use Train Table, making it usable from the toddler years on up. Nilo also includes a graphic mat featuring roads, waterways, and landscaping free with the Nilo Multi-Use Train Table.
::: Why We Chose Nilo :::
There are tons of train tables out there, many of them less expensive than the Nilo Multi-Use Train Table. But for us, there was no other choice. I liked the fact that it was less expensive than the Thomas-branded table, and that there were more play options with the addition of other Nilo products like the Nilo-Jax, a combination storage table/play bench, and the extender tables.
In addition, my sister has had her Nilo Multi-Use Train Table for over two years now, and both her boys and my kids have climbed on it, fought near it, banged on it, and had a field day playing trains on it, with virtually no signs of wear and tear. If her 64-pound son can sit on it with no trouble, I was confident that the construction was sufficient for a long-lasting piece of furniture that we would be able to use even after (heaven forbid) my boys' obsession with Thomas was but a distant memory.
::: Assembly and Construction :::
The Nilo Multi-Use Train Table usually comes drop-shipped from the manufacturer in two boxes, complete with an Allen wrench, which is the only tool other than a screwdriver that you need for assembly, which took about 30 minutes. It's very light-weight yet sturdy once put together, and my husband's first comment was how well-put together it was.
::: Purchasing :::
I actually spent quite a bit of time searching online for the best price, which I found at the Creative Brains Online Store, complete with free shipping.
::: The Final Word: Buster and Bug :::
Buster couldn't believe that Santa had brought a train table to our house just like his cousins had. He and Bug spend a couple of hours a day playing with the trains, and it's often hard to pry them off the train set to go to bed. Best of all, it's a toy that will last them, doesn't require batteries, and gets their imaginations working. Any track break-ups are referred to as "trouble in Sodor" and, aside from a new Buzz Lightyear, this was by far the favorite Christmas gift, prompting Buster to shake every wrapped gift looking for "tains" to put on the table.
