Pros: Amazing graphics, good sound, breakneck pace, tons of action, very challenging
Cons: Maybe a little too challenging at times
The Bottom Line: Tough, tough game. Lots of fun, but could frustrate a lot of players as well. Affordable quality entertainment though, if you like action games.
chalgyr's Full Review: Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PlayStation 3
The Ninja Gaiden series has a long history for doing new things - it was one of the first games I ever played that had cut scenes to help advance the storyline. It was also a brutally hard series back then. The cut scenes have certainly changed, but the demanding game play has not. How does Ninja Gaiden: Sigma hold up on the Playstation 3?
Graphics: Pretty amazing. This was one of the earlier Playstation 3 games, and even so the engine is made excellent use of. Movement is fast and fluid, and even when there is a ton of activity on the screen, there is no discernable slowdown. There might be better-looking games out there, but not too many. Despite being a somewhat older game for the Playstation 3, it has aged quite well.
Sound and music: Good all of the way around. Appropriate sound effects go a long way toward immersing you in the battle. Sometimes it helps in battle too. I recall certain spell-casting ninjas who made noise as the only warning I was in trouble. Not as impressively handled as the video, but still good.
Game play: Ninja Gaiden really excels here. Ninjas should be fast and deadly - and in this game you are both. The movements reminded me of Assassin's Creed to a degree, especially as I bounced off of walls to reach new heights and to launch deadly attacks. Along the way magic and new skills are learned and they are easily accessed and made use of.
Intangibles: This game is an excellent action adventure, and does the family name of Ninja Gaiden proud in my mind. One thing to keep in mind is that the game can be brutally difficult - another Ninja Gaiden tradition. Action comes at you from all angles and there is a way to handle all of it, but it takes some trial and error to figure it out. Sometimes checkpoints feel a bit further apart than they need to be as well.
Overall, this is a very good game. It shows a lot of the hallmarks of games that were worked on by a good video game team - sharp graphics, effective sounds, challenging game play and it is a lot of fun. That said, the violence might be a turnoff for some parents of young children, though it is far from graphic. The difficulty level could definitely frustrate gamers as well - especially younger ones. For those who can get past those points though, there is an excellent, challenging game to be had that is a pretty fair deal from most used game stores - since it has been out for a time now.
