Pros: Extremely durable, easy to use, classic games.
Cons: Can no longer be purchased new from the store :-(
The Bottom Line: Even though the N64 is now outdated, I recomend that anyone give it a try. Check auction sites, some pawn shops, etc. It is quite a nostalgic and happy experience!
sixhotpeppers's Full Review: Nintendo 64 Black Console
I am not a big gamer, but would like to write this review as an average mom that likes a terrific deal on good, durable, and exciting gifts for her children. I would like to give the the deserved credit to the Nintendo company and their past release of the Nintendo 64.
I have a lot of faith in Nintendo brand products. This started when I bought my children their first video game system a couple years ago... the Nintendo 64. I purchased the used system on eBay. It was the full package and came with everything an original Nintendo 64 would have come with years before when the system was released. The reason I decided on purchasing a Nintendo 64 verses a more up-to-date system was the cost and durability I had previously heard about. Being a first gaming system for my young children, I figured we could just upgrade at a later date.
With all of the new systems out these days, I was surprisingly amazed with the graphics of the Nintendo 64. They are clear, crisp, and detailed. I later found I that I could buy an expansion pack to increase the graphic capabilities even more. This worked very well. For the modern day world, the Nintendo 64 is definitely not as graphic intense as the newest on the market, but it does offer something that the new systems don't... simplicity with above average extras.
The Nintendo 64 carried many classic games in it's day that are less likely to be found on recent competing systems. These came in a cartridge format, rather than a game disc. My children's favorite are the Mario games. The Nintendo 64 seems to have the most Mario titled games, and they can even be found on many auctions site to this day. Nintendo had also released many other classic and well know games.
The controller for this system is easy enough for any age child or adult to use. There are no complicating features to struggle with. It fits well in a small child's hands, or an adults hands.
Now for my favorite feature of this system. The Nintendo 64 is extremely durable. I cannot count the times that this system was moved around, bumped, treated rough by young children, etc. The cartridges have been dropped, accidentally stepped on, and rarely cleaned. To date, I have never had a cartridge quit working, or even show signs of any problems. And, keep in mind, the cartridges were already used when I purchased them! All newer game systems use game discs. This leads to major problems, high cost, and no durability. The discs scratch very easily, and the systems that take them can become very costly. They also often get 'bugs' and display errors on a regular basis. If only Nintendo would release this durable, sharp, and simple system again...
This obviously will not happen. This world has turned more toward the digital revolution, which does have it's many advantages. But I am sure there are still some satisfied Nintendo 64 lovers out there saying "Long lived the Nintendo 64".
