Pros: bright screen can get tons of games I like the older classics available
Cons: split screen on some games can be daunting.
The Bottom Line: The Nintendo DS Lite is an amazing game system. It versatile, with many game options and seems pretty darn strong and able to take abuse.
popsrocks's Full Review: Nintendo DS Lite Onyx Black Console
Having the Nintendo DS Lite is the perfect combo for me offering Ol' classic games on a new compact, take anywhere, screen.
My grand daughter owns this Nintendo DS Lite. Once she let me use it, she never got it back. I'm gonna keep it forever!
I suppose I gotta get out more often. I didn't realise how cool, convenient and fun one of these little game systems could be and yes eventually she did get it back but not after much use by grandpa and she knows she mustg continue to bring it over time after time.
I started playing it one night and the battery went out right away. We plugged it in waited a while and the game was ready to go. After experience I now know that the battery lasts for playing all day with a full charge. That's great if on a plane or some kind of trip. My grand-daughter used it for her trip up to Lake George. It was her constant companion and never once did she ask, "Are we there yet?"

Tell ya the truth, I really wasn't interested in getting interested in this video game toy. I am busy 24/7 with plenty of things to do all the time. Anyways one night she came in with the Ninteno DS Lite and it looked cool. I scrolled through it and most of the 73 games she had in the system didn't sound familiar or they had names of which I was familiar but didn't know they had games. I'm not sure how many Spider man games I saw but there were a bunch of just that alone. My grand daughter surprised me when she told me that her dad, my son loved to play Teenage Mutant Turtle game. When he was a kid they were his favorite superheros. My grand daughter tells me that he is truly addicted to New Super Mario Brothers and that he beat the game in a little over four hours. He now wants to do it again. I digress.
Me, I was immediately hooked on the old games I grew up with. I loved playing Breakout, Pong, Pac Man, and yes Super Mario Brothers. The graphics were mostly the same I was always familiar with. Breakout was a little strange because it crosses both screen on this small,. compact game, about 2" X 5" that opens as two halve like a clam shell. It's not too much larger than my 60 GB ipod. What is also good is that I am very used to a small screen. I watch movies all the time on my iPod even though my wife guarantees me that I'm missing something every time I watch Dances With Wolves. Having watch movies on the iPod makes all views on the Nintendo DS Lite to be impressive.
Playing Pong and Breakout is a little weird because the ball crosses two screen of the half shell, one on each side. There's a slight difference in the angle coming at me. That said, I still enjoy those games and Breakout remains a classic favorite. Super Mario Brothers is fun and the graphics and sound just like old times. Actually, the sound is better if heard through the head phone option. WOW! the stereo sound is incredible clear and separated.
I have also played chess against the game and haven't won yet. I really do like the intuitive way the game plays. It's a real challenge and being clocked on moves puts the pressure on.
The colour of this Nintendo DS lite is black. They come in about ten colours from what I can see. Its got smooth gloss finish with rounded corners. It's the perfect size, feel, and fit for a pocket. It fits in mine well and my grand daughter will never find it again.
The two screens are extremely bright. I like that and the fact that I can adjust it at four different levels depending on the outside light I'm in. I keep it at brightest every time I use it. The volume control is sensitive enough to get the sound just perfect for me. I think I mentioned it earlier but the sound and definition of the game are excellent indeed.
Oh yes, I set up some crossword puzzles. Cool. I even got to write in my own letters. The screen is sensitive to the lines drawn and the game understand the letters I put in. I couldn't believe what kind of drawings and things could be done with this super toy. My grand daughter no longer has the original stylus that the game came with because her two year old sister grabbed it and pulled it right off. They can be purchased in bright colours so losing it should happen as easily next time. We just use the pointed end of a pen without the ink out. It seems to work well enough for me and hasn't been a problem on the screen.
In Closing
I really like this game and my grand daughter knows she has to continue to bring it every time she comes over. Fortunately for ol' pops satisfaction she comes over quite often. Though the game has so many games in it that my son purchased that are the newest and quite popular, I'm attracted to the classic games. I like that the screen is bright and the tiny controls are easier to use than I thought. Within a few times playing my and eye coordination was quite proficient in quick time.
I use my own head sets when I play the game. It has it's own built in sound too but, the stereo sound with ear buds is excellent.
Will I purchase on of these for myself. The answer is a definite "NO!" Ya see if I owned one I would never get to write reviews, or see the real world again. My wife would divorce me and my children would forget who I was. It's too easy for me to get suckered into playing all the games that can be purchased and placed in this thing, especially because it has incredible graphics, great sound, is easy to use, satisfies my ol' vid game needs and can be updated constantly.
I thought my iPod was cool. No way! The Nintendo DS Lite, no matter what colour chosen is a delight to play. Did I tell ya it's cool too?
Well, let me get back to playing right now. See ya...
