I bought 4 stylus packages until in desperation on an airplane trip I pulled out my pointed plastic pen. Imagine my surprise, when I discovered a regular plastic pen (remove the ink cartridge for safety) has better control than a tiny stylus! We all have spare plastic tipped pens laying around. I have used a plastic tipped, no metal, pen on my DS for over a year now. The screen is a little faded from wiping a cloth on it, but I can use screen cleaner to fix this.
A recent movie, "Supersize Me", discussed how our nation of unquestioning consumers is addicted to quick answers to simple problems, no matter the cost or side effects. The sale of the Nintendo DS Stylus packs are no exception. We see the Nintendo label on a bright plastic package proclaiming the solution to our misfortunes and blindly purchase. I found the stock stylus to small for my use. My hands are large and on days that I have worked on various woodcrafts, sore. Using a large plastic pen is an easy fit for me.
Finally, the real problem is the holder for the stylus itself. Overtime the holder gets worn because it is made of plastic. Hold your DS with pen inserted and give it a slight tap on a table. The stylus will fall out nearly everytime. A solution would be wrapping a piece of Scotch tape around the center of the pen to provide more resistance to movement out of the slot.
