chuckyj360's Full Review: Nintendo DSi Matte Blue Console
So here is Nintendos update. I will dig deep into a lot of issues and reveal what I think of the latest Nintendo redesign. Here is the breakdown...
Nintendo DSI specs and Technical information Nintendo has released few technical details regarding the DSi system. The company has improved some of the DSi's hardware (compared to the DS Lite), such as the main CPU and the RAM They stated that to improve portability without sacrificing durability, the front slot for Gameboy Advance cartridges has been removed CPU: The DSi has two ARM architecture CPUs; ARM9 and ARM7. The main CPU is clocked at 133 MHz. RAM: 16 MB of RAM (four times as much as previous models) This is a very nice feature, but it will be intresting to see if developers take advantage of this. Storage: 256 MB of internal flash memory with an SD card (up to 2 GB) and SDHC card (up to 32 GB) expansion slot. Very nice addition the expansion slot is almost a must have option. That alone is probably worth the upgrade. Wireless: 802.11 internal wireless connectivity. Works seemlessly pretty impressive. I am just glad no lag pops up.
Console design... 95/100 It has a very lite and nice and compact design. This makes the console ideal for trips, because of the portability. It is also very nice that this newly designed system has 2 cameras. This allows you to either snap a picture of yourself, or you can easily switch to the other camera and snap a picture of your family or friends. The SD expansion port is a very nice addition.
**The only negative here is they cut out the GBA support. This is not an issue for me, but for others it may. This is not backwards compatible with Gameboy Advance games. Control design... 90/100 The directional pad location on the console seems to be fine, and is also very responsive. However, I think the 4 buttons could have been spaced a little further apart. Other then that little tid bit the control design of the DSi is largely unchanged from its little brother the DS. This is not a problem though as there was nothing ever wrong with the control layout in the first place.
Present support... 100/100 Every company under the Sun supports the Nintendo DS, even Microsoft from time to time through their company rare (Think Viva Piñata pocket, Mr. Pants). But, really all the heavy hitters, Square-Enix, Capcom, Konami, and even the smaller start-up companies support the low risk high reward system like Mistwalker (Blue Dragon plus).
If you can think of a developer they have probably created a DS game or are currently developing one. Well.... Except Sony.
Present games... 100/100 The DSi has tons of games readily available with a wide range of gaming genres ready to play. Games such as: The Zelda (Series), Castlevania (series), New Super Mario, Mario Kart DS, Pokemon (Series), Final Fantasy (Series), Sonic (Series),
Future games.... 100/100 With support from every developer out there, the future out look is terrific. All of the heavy hitting franchises will continue to appear on the DSi as well as brand new games.
Bottom Line: The DSi has plenty of life left. I would say it has at least 2 years before the DSi successor is announced by Nintendo. With all the games presently available and the games waiting in the wings to be released there is no question why the DSi is the number 1 portable console of choice. If you are in need for a system on the go... Look no further then the DSi!
