mcheesecake's Full Review: Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube
Super Smash Brothers Melee lets you step into the ring with one of 25 classic Nintendo characters. This game is a fighting game like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but not as violent. Though it’s rated “T” for “mild violence,” I would suggest this title to kids as young as six or seven. Indeed, I have a seven-year old neighbor who can beat me at it any day of the week.
SSBM stems from the success of Super Smash Brothers, for Nintendo 64. The premise of the game is the same, but there are over twice as many characters (25 as compared to the dozen in the original), and several times more levels to play on. Also in the new game are many new single-player modes, where you can unlock secret characters and levels. The game is kept fresh time after time by numerous options that can be changed to provide a new type of multiplayer game, as well as a challenge to collect all of over two hundred trophies.
The characters range from the obvious Mario and Luigi to the more obscure Roy and Marth, from the Japanese “Fire Emblem” series. Choose from characters as old as Mr. Game and Watch, the pixilated man from the original arcade games, to Pichu from the Pokémon Gold and Silver versions. Their sizes vary as well, from Donkey Kong and Bowser, the two behemoths that Mario usually squares off against in his games, to Young Link from the Zelda games and Ness from Earthbound.
Despite the numerous fun single player games, I would suggest playing this game with one or more friends. Though only up to four players can play at once, you can hold tournaments with up to 64 human or computer players if you have a big party (assuming you even have that many friends!).
