Pros: The best first-generation release for the gamecube hands down
Cons: I would have liked to see a little more available for the single player
The Bottom Line: Beautiful graphics, depth, excellent play mechanics, music from over twenty nintendo games, secrets galore, infinite replay value, and tons of explosions make this the best multiplayer fighting game ever
rennaisanceman's Full Review: Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube
This is what all future multiplayer fighting games will attempt to emulate. Nintendo's trademark characters beating the bejesus out of each other...what more could one ask for. I mean, hey, it's about time that the gaming community was given the opportunity to vent their frustrations on the Mario bros. (not to mention Pikachu, yoshi, D.K., et.al.) in a hilarious and dramatic manner. At the core, this game does revolve around fighting, but parents, please don't let that discourage you. This game is crammed full of more entertainment than any other gamecube game available on the market today. Beautiful graphics coupled with an impressive, and immersive, score provide gamers with a truly unique experience that we have come to expect from Nintendo. The play control is very responsive, using simple mechanics so that even a complete novice to the game can perform advanced attacks from the very first time they pick up a controller. Combine this with easy to grasp advanced moves and dodges/throws and you have a lasting experience with immesurable replay value. All of the characters are easily recognizable from the Nintendo universe, and each have moves and special attacks that make it the first fighting game I have ever played where I could honestly say that they are all equal in ability, creating a truly unique and irreplicable experience each time you play. The game is a truly magnificent multiplayer, supporting up to four people playing at once, with no slowdown or problems whatsoever. Besides offering over 25 different playable characters and even more stages, the game also offers a staggering amount of items which appear randomly during matches. This is what truly makes the game shine. I can tell you there is nothing like playing the game with three friends, throwing poke-balls, bombs, party balls, etc. at each other and laughing hysterically to the point of dropping the controller in favor of holding your sides because people are flying off of all sides of the screen. Definitely my favorite fighting game of all time, and with no blood or dismemberment whatsoever. As a 23 year old male that is a very bold statement, and completely honest. There are so many secrets to find, in the way of new fighters, levels, trophies, options, etc. that even the most dedicated player will have to put in at least twenty five hours to even come close to seeing everything. Oh, I forgot to mention that the game is also, gasp!, educational. There are secret items that are constantly discovered that detail the history of the Nintendo company, and the games they have developed over the years, as well as future releases. If you or your child owns a gamecube, this game is a must have.
