pizzaboy54's Full Review: Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube
Characters from several Nintendo games are fighting each other to death. Why? I have no idea but it is a whole lot of fun. Super Smash Brothers Melee(SSM) is a GameCube recreation of the Nintendo 64 game.It is essentially a fighting game in which characters use their fists and items to try and knock their openness off the stage. All the intense action of the first game is back and better than ever.
GRAPHICS
This is what makes the game really shine. Every possible level of detail has been covered. The stages are detailed and have vibrant color. Several different events will happen right in the middle of the stage. In one stage a huge dragon like creature will come out of a sea of lava and turn the entire stage upside down. In another stage cars on a road whiz by as you try to stay safe on the roof of a house. All of these events look stunning. The characters themselves have a great amount of detail as well. Link's hair flows in the wind as he battles an enemy. Bowser huffs out a stream of fire to toast a foe. All of the character moves are performed so smoothly it almost looks real. That’s pretty good for a game that uses many fantasy based characters like Kirby and yoshi.
PLAY CONTROL
Anyone who has played the game "Street Fighter" knows how difficult it can be to perform special moves. Up down left right A; it’s just too much to remember. My fingers would get sore trying to push all the buttons. With Super Smash Brothers your prayers are answered. Even the most complex move only takes two buttons to perform. Simply push the "A" or "B" and a direction and you just did a "Complex" special move! For instance, to do Mario's jumping uppercut you would press up and b. His tornado punch would be b and down that’s all it takes It’s simple and makes the game really fun to play. Anyone can pick up a controller and learn how to play within 30 seconds. You could invite your Grandma over and punch and kick each other in no time. (I meant with the characters in the game, unless you really dislike your Grandma!)
SOUND
The game looks great and plays great but how does it sound? It would be pretty disappointing if when you threw a bomb at Mario and could barely hear the explosion. Well, not to worry because the game sounds great. (I love using the word great.) Everything sounds just the way it is supposed to. When Link slashes his sword in the air you can here the rush of wind as it cuts through the air. Mario yells out a joyful "yippee" as he performs his tornado punch. The sound effects are wonderful but it is the music that steals the show. Every stage is themed after a Nintendo game. There is Kongo Jungle where Donkey Kong is from and Yoshi's island where, well you know who lives there! Each of the stages plays music from the original game. You can hear the jungle music in DK's stage and take in the mystical sound of Link's music. It was enough to make me cry. (That's a lie I added it for dramatic effect.)
OVERALL FUN
Super Smash Brothers doesn’t have an epic story. It doesn’t have believable situations, but it is a terrific game. It is a game that is a blast to play. I like having a game where I can have fun and not worry about the story or what my character’s motivation is. Super Smash Brothers is pure fun. It is pointless and mindless action but that is what makes it so great. I highly recommend this game to anyone who just wants to have fun.
