A .79 Cent Six-Pack? Only If It's Top Ramen!
Written: Dec 02 '07
Pros:Easy to make, good taste, quick, individual packages, inexpensive.
Cons:The broth could use a little kick.
The Bottom Line: Top Ramen: Cheap, easy to cook and fills you up.
A lot of people make jokes about Top Ramen soups; that only poor struggling college students buy it and that it's a staple for people who can't cook. I like Top Ramen; you can make a bowl of soup that doesnt taste like dirty dishwater in under five minutes. Serve it with a grilled cheese sandwich or tossed salad and you have a quick meal for yourself. There are a number of bagged instant soups but out of all of them, The Nissin brand has the best taste; you arent getting gourmet food but it sure beats having to wait for Chinese delivery or a pizza delivery guy with an attitude.
Nissin Top Ramen Chicken Flavored Soup
This isnt a typical chicken soup; there's no bits 'o chicken in it and if you add too much water the flavoring can be a little watered down. If my throat is sore I will add a little extra chicken broth to it, usually a chicken stock or something in the form of a bullion cube. Generally the noodles cook in about three to four minutes, less if you break them up while they are still in the package. I take the heel of my hand, press down on the noodles and smash them up. It's easier to eat and they cook a little faster. You can also make this in a hot pot if you don't have access to a stove.
Making this is simple; add one cup of water to a pan and boil, add the noodles and stir until they are cooked. Open the flavor packet and add that to the soup. You can let it sit on the stovetop for a while to enhance the flavor or serve it over cubed pieces of bread or which crackers. Can you make this in the microwave? You can but you need to watch the noodles closely and to make sure the water doesn't boil over. Use care when eating because the soup is pretty hot. We have taken this camping with us and made three to four packs at a time in a large pot on an open fire; it cooked up perfectly and was just what we needed to warm us up.
Most ramen noodle packages are on the inexpensive side unless you start eating the imported ones or gourmet soup bowls. To me, that is a joke because its basically the same thing with a stronger flavor packet. I get the Nissin Top Ramen six packs at my local Save-A-Lot store for .79 cents. The local grocery stores sell them for about $1.49 for the same exact six pack of soup. I always laugh when I see people buying the individual packets for .50 cents; for another .29 cents you can get a six pack. You can also get these in 12 and 24 packs if you shop at larger stores or food warehouses. The cheapest I have ever seen them in .13 cents a pack in the 24 pack.
These aren't the most nutritious things to eat and there is a lot of sodium in them because of the salt in the dehydrated broth but sometimes you have to splurge a little and have something that's not all that healthy for you but tastes great. You can use the noodles for a lot of different things too; leave out the broth and drain them after you have boiled them and you can make a quick bowl of pasta. It isn't going to taste like "real" pasta but it works in a pinch.
So far I have never seen these in an assortment pack; you buy a 24 pack it is all one flavor. Out of all the Nissin flavors the chicken is my all time favorite but I do buy others for the brood. I've never had any problems with any of the Nissin flavors or in regards to cooking them. The worst thing you could possibly do is start a pot of water and forget about it on the stove. That's happened a few times and trust me on this, burnt noodles do not make the house smell all that great.
The Bottom Line
If you are into ramen noodles and haven't tried the Nissin brand yet, it's a good pick. Most ramen noodles are made the same so for most people it is going to boil down to price and what flavors are available. If they are out of the Nissin chicken noodles I will wait for them to get that specific flavor in rather than buying a different one but for other flavors, I will go with another brand. If you are a fan of ramen then this is something that you'll be familiar with, and at that price it's something that you just can't beat.
As always, thanks for the visit
