As soon as I heard about Nivea Silky Shimmer Lotion, I knew it would be something I wanted to try, despite the fact that I had never tried any Nivea lotions. I love to try new body lotions, and I also love products with shimmer in them. After trying out a few samples that were attached to ads in magazines and finding a $1.00 coupon, I found this product at my local Wal*Mart Store.
About Nivea Silky Shimmer Lotion:
Nivea Silky Shimmer Lotion comes in a 6.8 oz., pearl-white, oblong-shaped, shatterproof plastic bottle with a flip-top cap. The lotion itself is somewhat thick; it's not runny like a lot of body lotions. Upon first sight and smell, you will get the impression that this is a good-quality lotion. The lotion is a soft, pale gold color with some shimmer/opalescence. You can't feel pieces of shimmer in the lotion; they are too fine to be felt.
The scent of Silky Shimmer Lotion is very nice - it has a fresh scent - it reminds me of a marine/water-type of scent but with a hint of baby powder. I hope that makes sense!
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Triple purified water, glycerin, octyldodecanol, glyceryl stearate SE, mineral oil, petrolatum, SD alcohol 40-B, dimethicone, titanium dioxide, stearic acid, cyclopentasiloxane, mics, dicaprylyl ether, myristyl alcohol, cyclohexasiloxane, fragrance, carbomer, sodium hydroxide, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, iron oxides.
My Shining Experience:
I was somewhat nervous before I applied this lotion for the first time. I pictured myself covered in gold shimmer. We used to have a store here in the Cleveland area called "Silvermans" and they had a guy covered in silver paint from head to toe in their commercials. I pictured myself as his gold bride! So needless to say, I applied the lotion with a light hand at first.
The lotion glides on smoothly and absorbs into the skin quickly. I was not rubbing the lotion in for a long period of time at all. There was no greasy residue.
You can see the gold shimmer if you apply the lotion lightly, but it's not a bright or heavy shimmer. But because I like a lot of lotion, I tend to apply lotions and body creams heavily. After that first time, I applied the lotion somewhat generously, but not very generously. As you apply more, you will see the shimmer and the gold color start to build up.
Because the shimmer builds up on your hands as you apply the lotion, you must wash them after you use the product. Then, if you want the lotion on your hands, you have to apply it to the back of your hands and rub them together to avoid shimmer getting on your palms again. A lot of the time when wearing this lotion, I'm constantly checking the palms of my hands to make sure I'm not going to get gold shimmer on my my steering wheel, white clothes, other people, etc.
I think this product would be better if it were made with white shimmer or some other light shade. I realize that if it were made with a white shade of shimmer that it would then not be suitable for people with darker skin tones or people with tans. So maybe Nivea needs to make different shades, like Revlon does with their Skinlights line.
The moisturizing effects of Silky Shimmer Lotion are good and they definitely last. My skin always feels moisturized and supple for hours after applying this lotion.
I have had gold color/shimmer show up on white clothing while wearing this product. This is definitely annoying but is to be expected when putting a colored product on your skin, much like a bronzer product.
So Why Do I Still Use This If The Gold Is Too Much?
I think that the shimmer makes the skin on my arms, legs, hands and feet look better. I feel like I have a slight "glow." I am almost afraid NOT to wear this when I'm around others in a social situation now that I have used it!
Who Can Use This?
All skin types should be able to use Silky Shimmer Lotion. Keep in mind, however, that if you have any sort of ezcema or psoriasis or other skin problems (I have psoriasis), the gold shimmer particles will collect around patches of dry skin as you rub it in. So you may want to be careful to avoid these areas.
Purchasing Information:
I found my Silky Shimmer Lotion at Wal*Mart for $5.97 about two months ago. I also had a $1 coupon, bringing the price down to $4.97. I have also seen this product at K-Mart and drugstore chains such as CVS and Rite Aid.
