You may have dandruff, and you may not. Not all scalp problems are simple dandruff with flakes that show up on those bad days when maybe you did not wash or did not scratch the scalp good.
If you cant seem to keep the flakes at bay, then you probably have deeper problems. Now, the doctors may have discussed this with you and perhaps not depending on whether you tossed out head flake problems and depending on if your doctor considered that a major medical problem to address. Certainly, there are health problems more troubling out there than some white on your shoulders. Still, its not great to itch and to flake from the top down.
Ive had some dandruff irritations from childhood. This was not a house where a head wash every day was considered normal. Other family members had good hair and did not need the daily dunk to keep flakes at bay. I could not skip a single morning and come up with a black sweater with no dots of shameful head droppings.
Over the years, I have tried all the dandruff shampoos. They may keep flakes at bay for a few hours longer than regular shampoo and may give a cleaner feel short term, but they really dont address the head problems that some of us deal with. Products like Head and Shoulders work great IF I use them every single day. They dont do some of the other hair things I like. For instance, I dont find that my hair is soft with Head and Shoulders.
I spoke about my problem with my doctor, and he said that I had a high level of yeast in my body. This also meant more (of course) vaginal yeast infections. Cells grow faster and cause problems like flaky scalp. Daily dandelion tea helped some and especially with the vaginal yeast infections, and the tea plus Nizoral shampoo helped with the scalp problems.
Nizoral is a medicated shampoo and was only by prescription, but it is now over-the-counter with a slightly lower concentration of the medicine. I guess they lowered the level, since the advice is to only use this shampoo a couple of times per week. If a body decides to use it every day and buying it over the counter without a doctor to advise, then it would probably be better to get a lower dose of the medicine than a daily dose (as not recommended).
I have not found any real problems associated with this shampoo even on a daily basis though I guess there are some questions or it would not be lowered in power to put out for the general world to use. It works great with one or two shampoos per week, so it does not make sense to use it every day anyway. This is a high dollar product and intended for occasional shampoos. I use it the way suggested, and it works. When I am in flaking mode, I go one to two times per week with this shampoo, and I skip out on using this when I am pretty flake free. My estimate would be that I use Nizoral about 4 times per month total.
If you have only minor problems with dandruff, then I would not suggest any medicated products that dont have a lot of research to check out. On the other hand, if you do have flakes that wont let up, then this one is effective. Ive been using Nizoral at 2 percent for several years and now at 1 percent over-the-counter. This one does the job for stubborn flake problems.
If you do need to bump up to Nizoral, then see your doctor. There are other skin problems that may need to be addressed. For instance, my high levels of sugar and yeast infections suggest that I might be diabetic though Im not. It seems I am just a flaky head person, but its good to know for sure.
