Pros: Vinyl and Phthalate free, Non-toxic fire prevention system, hypoallergenic
Cons: Construction isn't as sturdy as needed
The Bottom Line: Despite the two small tears, I would still recommend the mattress. It has quite a bit going for it.

When I was shopping for a crib mattress for my baby, I was also doing a significant amount of research on-line about toxic chemicals. Let's just say, what I read had really disturbed me. Between the potential harms from PVC (vinyl), to phthalates to fire retardants, I was really concerned about my daughter sleeping on something that could harm her. I didn't want to have to worry about her breathing in potentially toxic chemicals for the majority of her early days. Since babies sleep so much usually, I was afraid that any chemicals she could breathe in from a mattress could affect her health. Because of this concern, I opted for a No Compromise Organic Baby Crib Mattress by Naturepedic for $259.
The No Compromise mattress does not contain any vinyl, yet it is waterproof. The outer covering is made from food grade polyethylene. It is considered non-toxic, and is also waterproof and stain proof. The inside of the mattress contains organic cotton.
According to Naturepedic's website, the mattress:
-Is hypoallergenic- With a dust mite barrier cover and no wool or latex in the mattress
-Has fire protection- "Cotton does not burst into flames or release deadly fumes when ignited.." There is also a non-toxic fire protection system that is naturally derived and meets all federal standards.
-Provides firm support with a heavy-duty orthopedic innerspring and flat surface
At the time when I ordered it, their selection was more limited than it is now. I opted for the Organic Baby Crib Mattress for $259, which is the current 150 coil option. The measurement for the mattress is 27.75" x 52" x 6". When I looked at the Naturepedic website, I was impressed with its ease of use, as well as the fact that it is recommended by healthychild.org (a very valuable site to me when I was expecting). I was also extremely impressed with the customer service. I had a few questions before I ordered the mattress, and decided to call the company and email them on two different occasions. For both occurrences, the response was quick, courteous, and detailed. The customer service really helped me feel comfortable ordering from a company that had only recently become known to me.
I placed the order for the mattress online, and through a promotion at the time was able to forego the shipping charge of $35 to anywhere in the continental US. The mattress arrived within seven days or so, in a box. The mattress also arrived in perfect condition. It was all white, and smooth in finish as described. I also pushed down on the mattress to make sure that it did not give much. A crib mattress that provides too much give is a suffocation risk to a baby. The mattress was very firm, which built my confidence. When my husband and I put the mattress in our crib for our daughter (which we purchased at Babies R Us), the mattress fit beautifully. It was snug and did not leave gaps that were too large on the sides.
I had also bought the organic waterproof, non-toxic mattress pad from Naturepedic, so our experiences with moisture and stains involved both products. My daughter occasionally had blow out diapers, and ones that leaked early on. Even if the sheet got soaking wet, no moisture ever made it to the mattress. The color of the mattress today is the same as it was when we bought it. We have had a bit of a problem with the stitching on two of the corners, though. I am not the strongest person, so I occasionally pull up the crib sheets without really lifting the mattress by much. I suspect that because of this, about 2 inches of the stitching came undone on two of the corners. I could've called the company and tried to get a replacement crib, but I decided not to bother. First of all, it could be the result of user error. Secondly, because the openings are so small and shouldn't really impact my daughter much, I decided to let it go. My husband didn't think it was a big deal either. I would estimate that we noticed the tears after about nine months of use.
Fast forward several months and my daughter now loves standing in her crib, holding onto the edge, and bouncing. Despite this, this mattress has held up very well to a 28 lb. bouncing toddler. With the exception of the two seam tears, the mattress has showed no wear.
The No Compromise Organic Baby Crib Mattress is far from cheap at $259. However, I think the potential health benefits are terrific. Overall, I have been happy with my purchase. If it weren't for those seam tears, I would give the product five stars. However, baby products require great resiliency, and this one obviously didn't have it (even with potential user error). Therefore, I can only give this product three stars.
Naturepedic also offers higher coil count crib mattresses, bed mattresses for children, and accessories for these mattresses. To find these products, check out naturepedic.com.
