When I was in eight grade I was required to read Irene Hunt's "No Promises In The Wind." Ever since that I have day I have re-read the book numerous times. It's one of those books that touches your heart every time you read it.
The story is about two brothers and a friend who, due to lack of finances, are forced to go out on their own during the Great Depression. The only hope they have of making a living is a somewhat foolish dream(because of lack of money to the average American) of becoming musicians. After setting out they soon realize that it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be to survive. They have many hardships, losses and heartbreaks in their journey, including the loss of one of three boys.
Irene Hunt is a great writer. I have not read any more of her books, but she proved herself very well with this one. She makes you understand the hardships, feel the pain of the characters and overall realize what it was like during the depression.
After the book is finished you find yourself wondering about how the characters are doing. The book is fiction, but the story has such character about it that you would never know it. Like I have said, I have read this book many times. Each time I enjoy it more. The book itself is not very long, but an awful lot is packed into those few pages.
It is a very sad book, so not everyone may want to read it. If you pick it up, make sure you bookmark your page with a kleenex. This book isn't exactly my style of reading, but it's one of those books almost anyone will enjoy. So in conclusion I strongly recommend you read this book. It is a book that touches your heart and your soul.
