| JulieQ's Full Review: Nokia 282 Cell Phone |
I picked up this little Nokia after I dropped my Nokia 5100 (or 5120, can't remember which) in a puddle and it summarily ceased to function. Fortunately, my old contract was 80% done with, so this new phone was only $50 or something.
I had no end of trouble with the reception (or lack of it) on my digital phone, so I decided to go with analog on this phone, and it has made all the difference in the world. I can even use the phone inside some buildings, which was an absolute impossibility with digital service. The reception is not the only plus, though. The phone is also much cooler-looking than the 5100. You flip it open--beat that for cool! To me, it seems sturdier than the look-alike StarTac, and the little antenna seems less likely to pull or break off than the StarTac's. Having to pull the antenna up is a slight disadvantage from the 5100, but it's not hard to get used to. Outdoors, you probably don't even need to put up the antenna due to the good reception.
The phone is very small. Its small size is bordering on a disadvantage for a couple of reasons. For one, I can't find it in my purse sometimes! I don't even have a very big purse with much in it. The other reason the small size might be bad is that you will definitely be tempted to store this little guy in your back pocket. It's only the thickness of a medium-sized wallet, so it's logical. DON'T DO IT. Especially if you wear your pants/jeans a little tighter. The buttons will rub on the screen, scratching it. You won't like that.
The menus on this phone are not quite as intuitive as those provided with the 5100, but if you go through them a couple of times, you'll get the options down. The ringing volume is very easy to change, which I appreciate since I'm in and out of class and meetings all the time. It also has a good quiet beep/vibrating setting--great for quiet settings. You can store 75 numbers (should be enough for most people), and there is quite a number of choices for ringing tone. The buttons are really small on this phone, so people with long nails and big fingers are going to have trouble, and it's hard to use in the dark or in a moving vehicle for the same reason.
I would recommend this phone to people who want a really small phone, for whatever reason. It's very functional and aesthetically pleasing as well. I certainly would not trade it for any other phone I've seen. I forgot to mention that the battery life is incredible for a cellular phone--they advertise 24 hours of standby, but it's been more like 36 most of the time for me. It is also not a problem to charge it when it's only partially discharged.
