| jagundo's Full Review: Nokia 5160 Cell Phone |
Cell phones are one of the new toys of the decade. It seems that the communication companies like Nokia and Motorola just can’t stop packing features (like internet and games) into the handy little gadgets. All those features and services cost money though and eventually you have to decide what’s right for you.
Strengths:
1. The sound quality is Excellent. It has its occasional problems when in elevators and such but most mobile phones have that problem. I ended up choosing to use AT&T Wireless which I have had no problems with, but the phone is pretty universal in that it works with most national and local mobile providers. The talk time is very good. It provides about 3 hours of talk time and 2-3 days of standby. I tend to talk a lot so I have never actually tested out the standby time.
2. The phone is very easy to use and to program. There is only one main button the phone; they call it the NaviTM Key. It is used to get to the menu, to send a call, to end a call, and to select options from the menus. There is also a cancel button and an up and down button for volume and scrolling. The simplicity makes it very easy to do what you want without having to wonder which button will produce the desired response. It does come with a little manual which I have yet to read because the On-screen help is very intuitive.
3. It doesn’t have any Internet features but that is about all that it lacks in that department. The phone has caller-id and a can receive messages. It’s phonebook can store up to 100 names and numbers which can be entered in uppercase, lowercase, numeric and even special characters like %, &, *. It stores the last 10 numbers you have dialed for quick redialing as well as a 1-touch dialing system. This lets you map certain phone numbers to one of the number keys for quick dialing of frequent numbers. The phone even comes with 3 games (memory, snake, and Logic).
4. You can also personalize this phone quite nicely. First off, I changed the greeting message when I turn on the phone. It’s not much but I get a kick out of it. You might have heard some phones with annoying rings, well this one has 30 distinctive ringing tones to fit your tastes. Even the look of the phone can be changed with Xpress-on™ color faceplates. I have three different color faces that I like to vary every once in a while to match my mood.
Weaknesses:
1. The phone itself (without the battery) is only a little over 5 inches tall and weighs about 6 ounces. This is pretty light until you attach the battery. The battery is very nice and provides for about 3 hours of talk time per full charge but also adds a bit of weight to the phone making it one of the heavier phones in its price class.
2. I also bought a second battery for my phone for those occasions when I don’t get I talk excessively. I brought this stuff home and realized that the battery needs to be attached to the phone to charge, the factory charger does not provide an additional slot for only the battery. I ended up purchasing an additional charger so I could charge my second battery while I used the other battery in my phone.
