| Yuniverse's Full Review: Nokia 5160 Cell Phone |
I bought this phone for my VoiceStreams PCS service. After about 20 days of usage, I had to return it.
Here are some of the pros and cons:
PROS
1) Inexpensive
Sometimes, you can get it for free with commitment to certain wireless services. For example, with VoiceStream Wireless, some dealers offer free Nokia 5160 with accessories.
2) Wide Availability
Nokia is one of the most popular phones out there. It is easier to find corresponding accessories at discounted prices than some other phones.
3) Interchangeable Face-Plate
This phone can accomodate different face-plates. Although it costs extra, some covers are pretty cool.
CONS
1) Sound Quality
The sound is somewhat dull and unclear compared to other phones that we have(Samsung, Sanyo and TouchPoint).
2) Interface
I tried other Nokia phones, but I just can't stand Nokia's interface. For example, I can't find out who called last time. With my other phones, I can find out last 10 numbers each, for Incoming calls, Outgoing calls, and Missed Calls. Some phone enables me to find out how many minute my last call lasted - even after hours have passed. Phonebook interface is terrible- only 8 numbers available to dial quickly (#1 and #0 is reserved). With my Touchpoint, I can have upto 100+ quick-dials.
Generally, the interface doesn't have much functions and it's not as intuitive as other phones I have.
3) Emission(?)
When I talk for awhile on any cellular phones, the phone gets very warm and I get dizzy. We've all heard about the harmful emission the cellular phones have. However, it seems that this Nokia has slightly more problem than other phones. I get dizzy faster than other phones.
Once, I had my phone next to my pc monitor. When the Nokia rang, my monitor gave me strange flickers. I tried it again with same results. It was definitely a "visible" emission coming from the phone. Curious, I tried the same thing with three other phones. However, Nokia was the only phone with that effect on my monitor.
4) Battery life
Battery life compared to other phones in real usage left much to be desired. I didn't time it, but it seemed like the battery lasted only 1/2 to 2/3 of other phones.
CONCLUSION
I've also tried several other Nokia models, but to my disappointment, they all had similar faults. I tried to save money by going with this Nokia offer, but I had to return the phone in the end. I would look else-where for a good phone.
Who should buy? - Those who can't afford to pay for other phones out there. However, considering paying high fees for the service month after month, If you can't afford $50-$99 to buy the phone, you shouldn't be bothering with cellular service anyway.
