| MADYL's Full Review: Nokia 6162 Cell Phone |
As a part of my job, I carry a company cell phone, so that I can be easily reached if necessary. I was used to carrying a Quallcomm (see my review at: http://madyl.epinions.com/./elec-review-5D5B-6E76CF9-393C733D-prod6), which is a much larger phone than the Nokia 6162. However, after using the Nokia 6162 for a few months, I am pleased with the differences.
The Design
The Nokia 6162 is a slimmer and lightweight phone by design, but large enough to grasp in your hand and view the screen (the light up screen is approximately 1.5” x1”). The Nokia 6162 is easy to handle, although the buttons are a little flatter than what I was used to with the Quallcomm (that took a couple of days to get used to). The Nokia 6162 also features a flip cover, which I prefer, because you know that it is turned off when you shut the cover. The volume is easily controlled by the up/down buttons, in comparison to a scroll down dial. The design of the cell phone is more high tech than most, and you can even purchase covers to match your clothing (I saw a zebra print one in a catalog recently, but I’m not sure that I want to go that far!)
The one thing that I dislike about this phone is that it can fall apart easily if dropped (the battery and phone piece are to separate pieces that are connected together, and the pieces can come apart if dropped). Of course, it can be put back together easily, but it is a pain. (I dropped mine in an airport last month, as my flight was leaving, the battery case flew under a row of seats). However, the pieces fit back in place easily.
Programming
Unlike most cell phones, this phone was the easiest to program. To the left of the screen, you can select options from the menu, and to the right of the screen you can search for phone numbers stored in your directory.
Menu Summary
The menu features:
•Messages- This feature allows you to receive text messages via email, voice messages, and a welcome note as an out going message.
• Call Log – This feature allows you to check the numbers of your missed, dialed and received calls. You can also check call times and clear your call list.
•Profiles You can select a normal setting, or silent, meeting, outdoor, pager, or headset option (which is good for driving). I typically have mine set on the normal setting, unless I am in a meeting, and have it silenced.
•Settings You can code a emergency key, automatic redial, set your clock/alarm clock, or change the language setting from English!
•System This feature allows you to “search” for a stored item.
•Games There are a few games on the phone, including a snake like game, etc. However, my 9-year-old son is more fascinated by them than I am. They kept him entertained when were waiting for a table in a restaurant last week, but other than that, I haven’t really used this function much.
•Calculator - The calculator is function is handy for quick calculations on the go.
•keyguard - I do not use this function, but this is a nice function in case you lose your phone (other people can’t call on it). However, I personally think it is a pain to type in a code to use your phone, so I keep this option turned.
Phone Book Options
It is easy to access your phone book. You simply press the up or down arrow button in the middle. The address book on the Nokia 6161 gives you the ability to store up to 199 phone numbers. You also have the option to list numbers by category by caller groups. For example, when my husband calls me, his name shows up and hearts appear on the screen menu (so it’s easy for me to see if my phone is lying on my desk, without reading the text of his name). When my co-workers calls, I have it categorized as business, and “hand shake” animation appears on the screen, to let me know that it is a business call. You can also set up a caller group for VIP (my children’s day care is the only one in that category, so that I know immediately, in case I have my ringer off). There is also a “friends” option for caller groups to identify personal calls from non-family members.
Conclusion
Overall, I am happy with this cell phone. This is the most versatile and user friendly cell phone that I have ever used. The Nokia is lightweight, but delivers dependable results!
