| chrisfll's Full Review: Nokia 6185 Cell Phone |
I have owned two Nokia phones since 1998. I first started with the Nokia 6160 when I was on the US Cellular Network in Tallahassee, FL. I then purchased a Nokia 6185 when I signed on with Verizon Wireless after moving to Fort Lauderdale, FL. My primary motivation for purchasing the 6185 was because the signal quality was crystal clear. I could also use the $59 battery from the 6160 as a backup.
I would like to say that the 6185 performed flawlessly but I had problems the very first day I purchased a handset. The speaker for the ringer produced a very raspy, almost intermittent ring tone. It sort of sounded as if it was shorting out. Office Depot was kind enough to exchange it for another 6185 handset. The second 6185 appeared free of defects but I noticed that packaging was a bit sloppy. It almost made me wonder if the phone I was purchasing was factory refurbished.
Moving on. The 6185 has a couple of nice features in addition to those found on the 6160. The first is the vibrating ringer. It is great when I am downtown or at the beach because it immediately signals me that it is my phone ringing instead of the phone from the person nearby.
The second nice feature is the Lithium Ion battery. I get about 2 hours of talk time on a freshly charged battery and it can go for about three days in stand-by mode. And it is slimmer and lighter than the Nickel Metal Hydride that came with the 6160 and is easier to carry in my pants pocket.
The 6185 also has an appointment calendar that reminds me friends birthdays and dates for meetings, etc. The date and clock are also updated by the network each time I turn on the phone, so I no longer have to manually enter the time when I switch batteries as I needed to with the 6160.
There is also a one touch key that allows me to scroll through programmed names. It is a really simple to use feature. Once I find the name of the person I want to call, I just hit “send” and I am connected.
An additional bonus, the 6185 has special ring tones to identify calls from friends and family as opposed to folks I may be trying to avoid.
I really like the 6185. I felt I got a lot for $150. But I am switching to Sprint PCS and wouldn’t you know it. They tell me my Verizon programmed phone isn’t compatible with their network. They also no longer carry Nokia. The sales rep I spoke to claimed they experienced too many customer complaints about Nokia and no longer carry the brand. I tend to think it is more of a marketing decision based on economics. Who knows? Regardless, I am now looking at Motorola.
So my advice? I recommend it but suggest you be alert to the condition of the phone when you first purchase it and operate it. Quality control seems to be a bit spotty. The phone I own has been great though. It has survived two falls from about four feet onto concrete. Aside from a few scratches, is still working flawlessly.
Good luck.
