| technocraft's Full Review: Nokia 8860 Cell Phone |
I'm a self-professed cellphone lust freak. My last phone was the Startac V3670, the little tiny Vader from Motorola. Very cool phone. I would still be using that analog phone if I didn't get a cellphone from work - which is on a digital plan, the Nokia 5160. Now the 5160 is a great phone, but it was cramping my style after having the V. Along comes the 8860 with it's sexy shiny finish and cool slide and I had to have it...
I paid around $400 from a person on Ebay for a brand new never activated phone. I never would have paid $800 for this phone. That's too much for any phone! From the beginning I intended to use this phone on Bellsouth Mobility and NOT AT&T. I successfully programmed it to Bellsouth and it works. Reception and battery life are not as good as a 51X0 or a 61X0, but certainly acceptable. The lack of an antenna bud sticking out makes it great to put in your pocket, but make sure your keys aren't in the same pocket. The chrome finish scratches easily.
I had some problems with the phone "reverting" back to the AT&T network and leaving me without service, so I sent my phone to a company that "unlocks" the phone so it can be used on any service. That cost $29 but took care of that annoyance for sure. If you're a user of AT&T, you can safely ignore this part.
In the end, I love this phone. Very stylish and the size is great. I love not having an antenna sticking out the top (the V is shorter in length but the antenna end bends and get stuck on things). When I'm with people with the same service on 5160's, there is not much difference. We typically have the same signal strength, with my phone having maybe one click less once in a while. Until I get a phone with Internet access, this will last for me...
