Product Rating:
Pros: Reception, call quality, great music playing capabilities, large base of available applications, lots of customization.
Cons: Battery life is not outstanding, camera not great in low-light.
The Bottom Line: Great phone with excellent call quality and reception. Well constructed (solid) and available at a very reasonable price with contract from AT&T.
I have had this phone for two weeks now, and I really like it - A LOT.
I am a big man (6'2"), and I HATE the little teeny phones with their small buttons that are popular now. Most new phones are too small for me and, with the light weight and small size are good candidates to end up in the laundry. I want a phone that has a little weight and is a bit larger -- but still small enough to easily fit in a pocket. I also want a phone that is easy to hold (the RAZR, to me, is just too thin to feel comfortable holding). The N75 is PERFECT for me. It has a bit of mass - feels solid - and, when flipped open, is large enough to "fit my face." By that its large enough for the mouthpiece to be by my mouth and the speaker to be near my ear.
Now, lets address this phones biggest weakness. The biggest complaint by many regarding this phone is battery life. One quick way to radically increase the battery life is to make a quick configuration change. Go to SETTINGS --> CONFIGURATION --> CONNECTION --> PACKET DATA and turn "Packet Data Connection" from "when available" to "when needed." Your battery will immediately last LOTS longer. I easily get over 2 days with moderate use. Also, if you unbrand it (instructions can easily be found on the web), you can switch the phone to not use the 3G network when you don't need it. 3G is a battery hog.
Call quality is excellent - as is signal strength. Isn't that REALLY why you buy a phone?? Also, the operating system (Symbian S60) takes a little while to get used to but - after a couple hours of playing with it - you will absolutely love it. Make sure you play the tutorials which come installed on the phone. Also, (and I know this is tough for many), READ THE MANUAL. If you like to customize, then this is the phone for you, and there is a lot of freeware or inexpensive software available for the phone if you need or want to add games, utilities, productivity, etc. software. The phone can use up to a 2GB micro_SD card (not included - but you can find online for approximately $20 now).
I've requested my unlock code from AT&T and plan to unbrand it - which will make it an even better phone as the added junk will be gone, and A2DP stereo is enabled on the Nokia firmware. For some reason the current AT&T firmware does not support A2DP stereo and I, for the life of me, cannot understand why they haven't yet provided a firmware which enables it.
The camera isn't great - for indoor shots - but it takes very good outdoor pictures (for a phone).
The music playing capabilities are OUTSTANDING. This is a wonderful choice for those who want an excellent MP3, WMA, etc. phone and don't want to have to buy a separate player. The phone also has a built-in FM radio - but you need to use a wired headset to listen to it.
I got this phone for an upgrade, with a $50 rebate, and a AT&T Premier discount. So the phone only cost me $75.00. Can't beat that!
In summary, this is a very good phone. Build quality is very high, it has excellent music quality, and a great operating system. Weaknesses are a poor camera (in low-light conditions), no support for wi-fi (that would have made this phone a STEAL!), and a somewhat short battery life (but all 3G phones share this trait).
Is it perfect? No. But its a very, very good phone.
UPDATE (02/14/08): I still like this phone very much. Since unlocking it from the AT&T network and updating to the NOKIA firmware - its even a far better phone. However, there is one negative things I've found -- on the silent profile the vibrate function is very very slight, to the point of almost being undetectable. My previous phone vibrated so much that it was very hard to miss - this one almost doesn't vibrate at all. One other thing thats a bit annoying is the proprietary port Nokia uses for the wired output port. Its hard to open the door, hold it open, and plug in the cable -- especially when driving and you want to plug in the phone to your stereo's auxiliary input. Still the positives with this phone far outweigh the few negatives.
