| drjonslater's Full Review: Nonzero the Logic of Human Destiny Books |
Robert Wright begins with a question we have all asked: "What is human destiny?" He briefly considers the ideas of the theologians, then moves on to demonstrate through game theory that human destiny progresses through a a predictable series of stages, illustrating this with historical and current examples. He then returns at the end of his book to consider some theological questions, which to my way of thinking, ties things up nicely.
Underlying the book is the idea that societies evolve because they confer a survival advantage to their members. Technology allows greater levels of social complexity. Wright considers the implications this has for our present apex of society, the nation state, as well as institutions such as democracy, liberty and equality which we now value.
This book is mental floss: it stimulates thinking. It's not for those seeking a pleasant way to kill time.
