Pros: easy operation, easy on joints
Cons: clunking noise
In April 2005, I bought a Nordictrack 990 from the Nordictrack store in a mall. It cost $799 plus shipping. I did not take the additional $50 for installation. I wish I had-- it took my husband and I almost two hours to install it! It definitely requires two to assemble (very heavy unit, and numerous steps that required four hands).
After 8 months, I'm writing the review. I decided to wait to get a really good feel of the machine. The operation is smooth and glides well, with low impact on my joints. It's a breeze to work out with, and I've lost the 15 lbs I set out to lose (now maintaining weight at 150 lbs).
There is a convenient cup-holder where I keep a water bottle to stay hydrated when I get parched. The angle of the fan that is located above the control panel is angled a little too high for my liking and tends to blow air either directly into my eyes or just above my forehead. The noise from the fan does not bother me, as it's much quiet than the loud clunking noise near my right foot.
There is an audible "ka-thunk" sound that seems to originate from the bottom of my right pedal. No amount of grease/lube/oil will fix this problem. I noticed this was a problem for several other reviewers too. I don't weigh above the specified 225 lbs (I'm 150 lbs!) so I dont think weight is an issue. The clunking sound persists for approximately 20 of the 40 minutes I am on the machine, and is louder on the lower resistance levels (levels 1 through 4).
