My husband is the kind of husband who likes his eggs fried in gobs of butter. I even purchased a non-stick frying pan for him to use, so he wouldn't need all that butter. Well he did use it a few times, but eventually he went back to his usual frying. He said the eggs tasted better his way.
So when I saw this 4 cup Microwave Nordic Ware Covered Egg Poacher in Target for $4.99 I decided to buy it. Not that it was going to make a difference to my husband, but I thought it would be worth another try. Maybe, just maybe he will love a poached egg once in a while for a change.
This Microwave Nordic Ware Covered Egg Poacher comes in 2 pieces. The bottom base is made of a hard plastic, with 4 individual egg cups, which will cook 1-4 eggs in a matter of a minute or so, depending on your Microwave oven.
The top is a clear domed plastic see-thru steam cover, which fits nicely over the base. This is a must to use to prevent any spatters in your microwave. The see-thru cover will also allow you to monitor the cooking progress of the eggs.
The 8 inch diameter of the egg poacher is just the right size and will fit all microwaves.
Cleaning the Egg Poacher:
Make sure that you wash the Egg Poacher before you use it for the first time.
This egg poacher is a breeze to clean. It's dishwasher safe and can be put into your dishwasher, or washed by hand in soapy water, rinsed and then dried.
Should some of the egg become baked on and you don't have a dishwasher, just soak the base in warm soapy water for a few minutes. It will then be able to be removed with a sponge.
You can use a cleaning pad made especially for non-stick finishes. But do not use any harsh abrasives or scouring powders. I always soak the base immediately after the eggs have been removed from the poacher. This makes cleaning up quicker and a lot easier.
Cooking Steps:
Before you place the eggs in the poacher base, you have to add ½ tsp. of water to each egg cup before you put the eggs in. This will add additional steam and slow the cooking process for better poaching.
If your only poaching 1 egg, then you have to add 2 or 3 Tsp, of water to the other 3 empty cups, along with ½ Tsp. of water for the cup with the egg in it.
Before you put the Egg Poacher into your Microwave, you must prick the egg yolk. I just use the point of a knife or a toothpick. This will prevent the egg yolk from bursting.
Place the clear steam cover loosely onto the base and place it into your microwave.
Eggs are extremely sensitive to hot spots in the microwave. So if your Microwave doesn't have a turntable, then you will have to rotate the egg poacher every 20 seconds or so. My Microwave does have a turntable, so I don't have to do this.
Every Microwave oven is different and cooking times will vary for different wattage ovens. The first time I used the egg poacher I had to experiment at first. The first poached egg I made, I left it in the microwave a little to long, and ended up with a hard egg. So I found it best to stop the Microwave every 30 seconds or so to check for the desired doneness. After a little practice, I found out that my eggs will take about 1½ minutes to poach on a medium setting. Like I said before it depends on the wattage and your settings.
One thing I found is that you do not overcook the eggs, because this will only turn the egg hard like mine did. Eggs in the Egg Poacher will continue to cook even after they have been removed from the microwave. This is why it's best to remove them before they are fully cooked. You can usually tell just by looking at them through the clear cover while their still in the microwave to see how well they are cooked.
While your eggs are cooking, you may hear a slight popping. This is normal, no need for concern.
Remove the the egg poacher from the Microwave with a pot holder, and do not remove the plastic cover for 30 seconds. This will allow the eggs to finish cooking.
Be very careful when removing the cover, because hot steam will escape and could cause a burn.
This Nordic Ware Egg Poacher should only be used in your Microwave and should never be used on top of your stove or in your broiler.
I like my poached egg placed on a toasted English Muffin with a slice of cheese. Or you can also use bacon or a ham slice. These taste great too. I'm sure you can come up with some variations of your own also.
My husband likes his Poached Egg on a English Muffin with a slice of cheese also. At least now he will poach his eggs every once in a while this way instead of frying them all the time.
I like My Microwave Nordic Ware 4 cup Covered Egg Poacher. It's very easy to use, easy to clean, requires no greasing, and will make great poached eggs in a matter of a minute or so. So if your tired of scrambled eggs, or fried eggs, try a Microwave Nordic Ware Covered 4 cup Egg Poacher, and make yourself a great Breakfast Muffin Sandwich.
