| quickanddirty's Full Review: Nordictrack CX 925 Elliptical |
Like the title says, this is an exceptional elliptical trainer for the price. I paid a little over $500 USD for this piece of equipment. And I couldn't be happier.
Shopping Around
We looked around at various sporting goods stores, Dicks, The Sporting Authority, etc..., exercise only retailers, and of course, Sears (where you can buy pretty much anything). We tested out models that cost $200 to $3000. As expected units that cost less, performed not to well, whereas the more expensive models were superb in all areas; welding, weight, functionality. But somewhere in the middle, and a little less-expensive than expected, the NordicTrack 925 CX came along.
Price, Features, Functionality
The 925 CX is a great piece of equipment for the price (this is the updated model - NEL0794 - , not the previous model most likely mentioned in other reviews). Price paid was around $500 USD. Set up time was about one and a half hours. All you need is a hammer (or mallet), a Philips head screw driver, and a second person to hold some things while they are being bolted together. Unit weighs about 130 lbs, which is just light enough to actually use the cardboard boxes included in the shipping to prop things up for one person assembly - but use 2 people it is safer.
The features on the 925 CX are good enough for the home user. There are 6 preprogrammed routines, which do need some adjusting to the users preferences (they are to easy). The fan is nice, but I would rather have a larger display. The bio feedback info is good enough for me (when I sweat, I know I am working hard). Heartbeat, calories, speed are displayed in a round-robin fashion. 4 D bateries power the unit.
The unit is solid and I (to date) have not noticed and clunking, screeching, or other defects in the daily operation of the machine. When assembling, do apply liberal amounts of grease where required, since those parts will not be coming off ever again. I did notice some initial lagging in the flywheel, but those problems seem to have been corrected with use (maybe grease getting to where it has to).
The unit is a little over 6' long and about 20" wide. I recommend buying a mat to place the unit on to avoid damage to your floor or carpet. A person of 6'3" will not have a problem using this machine with a ceiling height of only 7'1".
Update:
As of 8-2-05, the machine is being used 3 times a week. No major problems. Just need to keep the parts greased and replace the 4 D batteries.
