| cbraunre's Full Review: Philips Quadra 6885 XL Electric Shaver |
I'm a 21 year old college junior with better things to do than spend 5-10 minutes a day lathering up and getting out the old razor. While I don't think any shave will ever compare to a Mach 3 razor, after owning this Norelco Quadra 6885XL for over two months now, I don't think I will ever go back to the conventional razor. I had tried a competitor's electric
razor about three years ago and after a few shaves the thing went right back to the store. It missed whiskers and made my skin really irritated. This was back in my later high school years and I had time to shave with a razor, so it was no big deal. But now things have changed and time is of the essence.
When I heard about the Quadra Action shavers, I looked at several of the different models and compared the features of each. When it came down to it though, I thought about everyone I knew that had an electric razor and they have all had their razors for years. I figured that if I was going to spend $100, I might as well go another $50-$65 and get one that I would really enjoy using and benefit from over the next 5-10 years (or as long as this one lasts--hopefully at least that long!).
This model takes the guess work out of everything! It tells you when to charge, when to clean (rinses under hot water), and exactly how many minutes are left on that charge. A full charge gives you approximately 35-40 minutes of shave time and I've found this to last for about 2 weeks (given that it takes about 2-3 minutes per shave). The unit comes with
a pop-up sideburn trimmer, a stand for your bathroom counter (or where ever you keep it), cleaning brush, charger and travel case.
Personally, I found that it took about 4-5 weeks for my beard to adjust to this razor and get the really close shave Norelco promises. Norelco says it should only take about 3 weeks, but everyone is different. I've heard from other friends though with other razors, that it DOES TAKE at least a few weeks to adjust to any electric razor. So don't give up right away (unless your skin gets really irritated, then I'd try one of the Norelco's razors that dispenses a shaving gel as it works). During the first week or two, my skin got a little irritated in few spots, but now it's fine. And no more razor cuts!
Now, I can shave any time (before dates or meetings) and anywhere (even in the car!) -- especially since it's so quiet! While you can use it in the shower (I've never tried it this way, but it is a waterproof unit) it works best on a dry, clean face. This way, your beard won't be stuck to your face and the lift-and-cut razors grab each whisker.
FYI, I purchased my razor at Best Buy for $165. I've seen it on the web for $150, but the return policies on those sites weren't as lenient as a local retail store. I am pretty thrifty (hmmm, yes I did just spend $180 w/tax on a razor though!) so I figured that if this thing didn't give me a $180 shave, it was going right back. Also, while there are a few sites out
there offering refurbished 6885's for about $130, I noticed the warranty was only for a few months -- much less than Norelco's full 2-year warranty on new models. It's up to you. If you want to save some money and know you won't be returning it, check out www.ubid.com. This is a great (and safe!) auction site I've used for years. It doesn't get the publicity eBay does, so you can win things for less. They usually have quite a variety of different models, but I highly recommend one of the Quadras.
