Pros: Does not roll if set on a flat surface. Very nice center beam of light.
Cons: No temporary quick-shine by half-pressing the rear cap button. No belt clip. Mild textured aluminum.
The modern LED flashlight market offers lights of most every size and shape possible. That is good. What is less good is that many LED flashlight makers are adding "high tech" fancy features into their flashlights which actually make their flashlights less useful.
I own over 20 different models of LED flashlights easily available from local retail stores and accepting common AA, C or D cell batteries. In my reviews I will group each type separately and compare simular models with each other.
This review is for the NORLITE Model 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight from the Norlite's High Power Tactical Series of LED flashlights. Happily, the NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight, and the other two 100+ lumen class flashlights I own in this class, do not suffer from having unhelpful fancy high tech features.
The NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight takes two AA batteries and is rated at 136 lumens with its XR-E X-Lamp LED bulb. The flashlight is shock and water resistant. Other 2AA 100+ lumen class flashlights I own are the FENIX Everyday E21 2AA LED Flashlight and the Energizer Ultimate Lithium 1 LED 2AA Hand Held Flashlight. All have lifetime warranties.
The Norlite, Fenix and Energizer are roughly the same size, although the Norlite is the thickest and heaviest. All accept standard easy-to-find afordable AA batteries (which is an important feature for me).
The NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight is the heaviest of the three flashlights I compare in this class. It feels very rugged and it is better than the other two (because of its weight and thickness) if needed to be physically used as a defensive weapon.
The NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight has a strong center spot beam of light. It does not twist and focus, but neither do the others. The NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight shines brighter than the Energizer Ultimate Lithium Flashlight but less bright than the Fenix.
If laid down on a flat surface, the NORLITE 08-NSWAT Ultra Bright LED Flashlight has a notched ring around the grip to prevent rolling. It is the only flashlight of the three that is built to be set on a flat surface. The Fenix will roll away very easily, and the Energizer Ultimate must be laid down carefully using its belt clip to prevent rolling.
All three flashlight models have rear cap press-on buttons. The Norlite accepts the widest and broadest pressure which is easy and most comfortable.
Neither the Norlite 08-NSWAT 2AA Tactical LED Flashlight or the Energizer Ultimate Lithium LED 2AA Hand Held Flashlight have temporary quick-shine by half-pressing the rear cap button without making it click on. Only the Fenix E21 LED Flashlight has that ability.
The Norlite 08-NSWAT 2AA Tactical LED Flashlight and the Energizer Ultimate Lithium Flashlight have some battery shake. There is no battery rattle with the Fenix E21 LED Flashlight.
The Norlite 08-NSWAT 2AA Tactical LED Flashlight and the Fenix E21 LED Flashlight do not have a built-in belt clip. Only the Energizer Ultimate Lithium Flashlight has a clip.
The Norlite 08-NSWAT 2AA Tactical LED Flashlight cannot be set on end -- say set on a desk pointing to the ceiling -- like the Duracell Daylite flashlights can. Of the 2AA 100+ lumen class set, only the Energizer Ultimate Lithium 1 LED 2AA Hand Held Flashlight can be set on end (although it would be tippy).
This Norlite does not have a low energy map reading mode, while both the Fenix E21 and the Energizer Ultimate do. However, even if the Norlite had a low energy mode, it still would not be all that useful for map reading as its center spot cannot be adjusted to flood. For a flashlight built for high brightness to be useful for map reading, it needs to have both a low energy mode, and the ability to adjust its center spot beam to a gentle wide flood mode. Neither the Fenix E21 or the Energizer Ultimate adjust to flood, so none of the three are all that great for map reading.
The final small negative is with exterior gripping. The Norlite 08-NSWAT 2AA Tactical LED Flashlight and the Fenix E21 LED Flashlight have textured aluminum, while the Energizer Ultimate has a rubberized exterior. In the world of textured aluminum exterior flashlights, there is better gripping textured aluminum. Neither of these 100+ lumen class LED flashlights has a biting grip texture as good as the simple sub 100 lumen Cabela's Model IK-517128 1/2 Watt 2AA LED Flashlight, for example. Nothing is perfect.
