| disartain's Full Review: Norpro Professional Meat Tenderizer |
Do you ever have a tough cut of beef or steak that you want to tenderize? Well I buy many cheaper cuts of meat and this means having to tenderize them. I could use a bottle of meat tenderizer but my husband thinks if it will tenderize meat then it would tenderize his stomach. There is no accounting for husbands ideas.
I have used everything to tenderize meat, a saucer to hit the meat with, a mallet that pounds it, you name it I have tried it. I finally found the Norpro Professional Meat Tenderizer.
Description
It is a simple idea; I wish I had thought about it first, I would be rich by now. The meat tenderizer is about 7 inches tall and 2 ½ inches wide at the bottom. It has a round plate that covers the steel spines when you are not using it. It has 24 stainless steel spines that are pointed on the end of each one and very sharp. Each spine fits into a hole on the round plate at the bottom of the meat tenderizer. It is made of some type of hard plastic material.
It has a spring inside that allows the up and down motion of the meat tenderizer. As you press down on it the round plate at the bottom moves up showing the spines and allowing them to fully penetrate the meat. The handle is slender in the middle and get rounder as it tapers up to the top, this allows your hand to fit around and hold it firmly.
Pros
This gadget will tenderize anything from the thickest roast to the densest steak or anything in between. Any beef, lamb, liver, pork or whatever meat you want to tenderize.
It is so sharp that it penetrates the meat breaking the fibers and tenderizes as this is occurring.
The tenderizer is inexpensive I believe I paid 6.99
It is dishwasher safe.
It only takes a couple of minutes to use it and does the job.
Cons
The only thing that is hazardous about this tenderizer is the sharpness of the spines. The 24 spines are about a inch or more long, thick and sharp. If you were on the downward motion and your hand was in the way, you would have many deep holes in your hand that would require a visit to the hospital.
This is not a tool for children to use.
My Experience
I have been using this for quite a while. I usually season my cut of meat on both sides and then use the tenderizer with a few well aimed hits on the meat this allows the seasonings to seep into the meat and gives it a better flavor.. You can use it as much or little as you want. On liver or cubed steaks, it does not take many hits with this. On roasts and other cuts of beef or pork, I make many holes. On Hams, I use it to make little holes to put my cloves into and then pour my glaze over it and it seeps right into the ham.
Using this is like kneading dough you can take out many frustrations while preparing your meat to cook. I have a meat mallet but only use this if I want to flatten a piece of meat. The Norpro Professional Meat Tenderizer I use on all other cuts of meat. It tenderizes without using a seasoned meat tenderizer that contains MSG and this satisfies my husband. It makes the meat so tender it will melt in your mouth.
Thanks for reading.
