| andaryl's Full Review: North Coast Ruedrich's Red Seal Ale |
This was another one of my Christmas stocking fillers that I eventually got around to trying tonight. Ruedrich's Red Seal Ale is brewed by North Coast Brewing Company, a brewpub in Mendocino, CA. The company brews a wide portfolio of styles, although many may not recognise these as there seems to be little uniformity in the label design. Infact the only consistency is the cap which tells you the name of the brewery. This is the company that also brews the Acme beers. Uniformity in design is something which I feel is important in a brewery's product range, so that I can easily spot other products in future.
The Red Seal
The bottle starts out pretty well on this one proudly stating "Hand Made", and "Water, malted barley, hops, yeast and that's all". The label pretty much encourages a purchase.
The beer is slightly foamy in the pour, fairly light in color for a red ale, closer to an amber. A light carbonation rushes up the glass to a light head which lasted a few minutes. The aroma is a little hoppy, with fruit, and a hint of malt. Initially it reminded me very much of Red Hook. There's just a hint of sweetness at the front of the palate, whereas the middle to end is very citrussy, grapefruit-like, with a bitter slightly dry finish. The finish gradually mellows out to a smoother fruitiness.
While this beer was nothing outstanding, it's definitely a good performer that invites you to drink it. I would buy it again, although maybe only if I saw it on promotion. I enjoyed mine with a pre-dinner appetizer of creamy shrimp in puff pastry and vegetable samosa. It would work well with a wide range of lighter foods such as chicken dishes.
