I've been a Norton anti-virus/Systemworks user for years. I recently saw this upgrade at BestBuy and decided to try it out.
I'ts a new version - it should be better - and faster - right ? No.
I expected a new look and feel, and improvement in critical features over the 2002 version - it didn't happen. This product looks very similar to the 2002 proudct - with few improvements except for bugfixes and virus definition updates.
Some of the key features :
Email Scanning : Scans incoming/outgoing email with Outlook or Outlook Express. This slows down receiving and sending email considerablry - but I guess it's worth it, because email is the source of most viruses. I'm hoping symantec will make this component faster in future releases, though.
LiveUpdate :
Gets information on new viruses over the internet. This is a key feature that all anti-virus programs should have, it can protect against new viruses discovered AFTER you buy the boxed product. You get only one year of this service with NAV 2003, and they want you to renew - or buy the new version when that subscription runs out.
Scheduleing :
You can set NAV to auto-run virus scans, daily, weekly, or monthly. This feature is great for business and schools, because they can set the scanner to run at night, and it doesn't interuppt the people working during the day.
Auto-Protect :
Protects files , dynamically scanning for viruses as they are accessed. This means you don't have to run a full scan very often, because it weeds out files that may contain viruses. Because it checks files as they are accessed, and does not run a full scan, you may continue to use the computer while NAV is active, without a noticeable drop in performance.
Overall, I think this is a good product for the home user, because it is made to be easy to use, and because of low cost. However, there is room for improvement in some areas.
