All Computer Technology's $2,998 (direct) ACT ND5123TE posted competitive test scores within its CPU class; only a short battery life hampers the unit. Targeted at a broad range of users, the Pentium/133-based ACT notebook offers crowd-pleasing hardware, such as a 12.1-inch active-matrix display and a 1.3GB hard disk.
The 9.3-pound (travel weight) ACT ND5123TE used a SiS chip set, 256K of pipelined-burst L2 cache, and EDO DRAM, which kept its CPUmark32 scores within the average range. The Toshiba hard disk and the 6X CD-ROM drive posted average and above-average scores, respectively. The unit lasted a disappointing 1:22 on our BatteryMark test with the standard nickel hydride battery.
A graphics engine (Chips & Technologies CT65550) with 2MB of VRAM runs the Super VGA display with 64,000 colors, and SRS 3-D sound is built into the system for enhanced audio. The system also features an unusual option: a 230MB Fujitsu magneto-optical drive ($498 direct), which is interchangeable with the CD-ROM drive.
The ACT ND5123TE doesn't run for long away from an AC outlet, but otherwise it's a good general-purpose notebook for users who want near-desktop-level performance.
