Pros: Attractive crowd, pretty desserts, corn empanada
Cons: The food might be pretty, but it wasn't tasty. The desserts were bad.
The Bottom Line: Avoid this place unless you are more interested in scene than you are food. I know I will!

| JasonNYCity's Full Review: Novecento |
By now you know (through reviews of Don Chicho's and Campo)that I like Argentine food. I saw the menu before heading down to Soho to try Novecento, and had high expectations. Up until now I have NEVER written a negative review.
The scene: The hostess had the tall Brazilian waif-ish model look, and a tiny soft spoken voice. Since the restaurant is noisy, we couldn't hear a word she said to us. The restaurant had an attractive trendy clientele.
Decor: The decor itself was not trendy. They had a few simple vintage industrial Argentine advertisements/signs, and that was it.
Service: I had difficulty getting our waiter when i needed him, so had to I had to call over whoever I could get. That isn't a good sign.
The food: The skirt steak might have been flavorful if it wasn't way overcooked, and therefore leathery. The corn empanada was interesting and tasty, but the beef one was definitely not Argentine influenced. It was a bit too savory and didn't have olives, eggs, or raisins. The milanesa de carne (beef cutlet) was good (but not great), and I did like that it was served with lemon wedges. I can however get a milanesa that good at any Argentine restaurant, even the divey ones. The french fries were alright, but could have been crispy, and a bit less salted.
The desserts had that pretty/trendy look, with lines of sugar, chocolate, or fruit sauce, but were not good at all. My quince (membrillo) tart was a very pretty hockey puck, and the flan could have been made from a powdered mix.
Prices:
Appetizers are $6 to $9, and entrees are $15 to $23. The skirt steak was $21, the milanesa was $15, empanadas were $6 for two. The desserts were $7.
