Pros: Cleans well, easy to apply and remove, great scent.
Cons: Dries skin slightly, eucalyptus/camphor/menthol smell will be too strong for some.
The Bottom Line: Noxzema Original Face Wash removes makeup effectively and I love the strong eucalyptus smell and tingling sensation. Gentle enough for everyday use. I highly recommend it.

| mrs-j's Full Review: Noxzema Original Face Wash |
Now that I have found Bare Escentuals I've actually started wearing makeup on a much more regular basis. Because Bare Escentuals stays on the skin so well, I have to really seriously clean my face each night. A simple wash with a moist cloth followed with some toner on a cottonball simply won't do. So when I saw a jar of Noxzema Original Face Wash at the grocery store, I picked it up, recalling with fondness the days when I used to use this product as a teenager.
About Noxzema Face Wash
Noxzema products have been made since 1917 and according to Noxzema's official history, the name was derived from a statement a satisfied customer made about the product: "You knocked my eczema." Noxzema makes the following claims of this cleanser:
"For clean, healthy skin, use greaseless Noxzema every time you wash instead of soap. You can feel Noxzema working as it deep cleans to remove dirt, oil and make-up. The water-based formula with camphor, menthol and eucalyptus tingles and refreshes without overdrying to your skin looks and feels fit. Beyond daily cleansing, try Noxzema to cool and soothe overheated skin."
Noxzema, which is available in a 14 oz. blue jar for about $3.99 contains the following:
Ingredients: Water, Stearic Acid, Linseed Oil, Soybean Oil, Fragrance, Ammonium Hydroxide, Camphor, Menthol, Eucalyptus Oil, Propylene Glycol, Gelatin, Calcium Hydroxide
Using Noxzema Face Wash
Noxzema directs that you use this product by scooping out a small amount and rubbing it over either a dry or wet face in a circular motion using either your fingers or a washcloth. After applying, simply rinse it off.
I opened up the jar and the strong camphor, menthol and eucalyptus scent immediately reminded me of the good ol' days back at summer camp where I discovered this stuff. I'm usually not fond of strong scents but I love tingly ones like this.
Digging my fingers into the cream I found it a lot harder than I remembered it to be. I had wet my face prior to using the cream so I simply rubbed it over my wet skin using my fingertips as directed. I rubbed over my cheeks, forehead and neck. Once the cream was applied all over I took a warm wash cloth and wiped the cream off, rinsing the washrag and squeezing thoroughly after each stroke across my face.
Applying and removing the cream was a little messy but I made much less of a mess using it than when I use pure liquid based cleansers. The texture of the cream is substantial enough that I don't have to splash my face with water, just using the wash cloth to wipe it off. I hate those cleansers that you have to wash on and then completely rinse your face with running water to get off. They make too much of a mess at the sink.
The cream really does tingle, just as I remembered, and the scent opened my sinuses right up. If you don't like a strong eucalyptus-type scent, you should avoid this product at all costs.
How Well It Worked
My face was shiny and free of all noticeable makeup once I patted it dry. To see just how much makeup was left on my face I used a cottonball saturated with toner. Much to my surprise, only a very small amount of makeup came off on the cotton ball. I would guess that the Noxzema easily got 90% of the makeup off my face with no scrubbing or harshness, just a gentle wipe on of the cream and wiping off with the wash cloth.
One thing that I noticed with Noxzema is that the original formula dries out my face a little bit. My pores feel tight and my skin is very shiny after I use the product. Since I use the Noxzema right before I go to bed I simply apply one of my many gentle, light moisturizers without any SPF to my face to ease the dryness. I find that my Cetaphil lotion works best.
Summary
I love using Noxzema because I love the fresh, tingly scent and feel, and because I love how easy it is to apply and take off. The product does a fine job of removing very stubborn makeup from my face, and it's gentle enough for me to use every single night. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a daily cleanser, but only if you like strong eucalyptus-like smells. If you're not sure if this product will be too strong-smelling for you, simply unscrew the cap at the store and take a good whiff. There's no wrap or cellophane between you and the product once you first open that cap so you can get a really good idea of what it smells like before you purchase it.
