In one of those rare decisions made as a child that lasts a life time, when I was 11 years old, I chose to use Noxema Original Face Wash for my skin care. I continue to use it to this day, 34 years later, with great satisfaction.
Skin Care for Teens in the '60's
Can be summed up in one word - dismal. Oxy 10 and other acne products were just coming to the market, and I was not sure if I wanted something so "medicinal" and strong on my skin. Ads for Noxema Original Face Wash caught my eye, and I decided that it might be an overall good skin care product. I hoped that switching to using this instead of soap, would be enough to deal with the pimples and oily areas that I was beginning to have at age 11.
What it did for my skin at age 11
It kept me from having more than the occasional pimple, and prevented any of the scarring I saw happen with other teens in my classes. I found a decrease in the oiliness of my nose and the forehead, and it helped to clear up the black heads that had become a problem and an embarassment to me.
What does it do me at age 45?
I can truthfully say that folks continue to mistake my age by as much as 10 years. I do finally have a few crows feet around the eyes, but my skin has a smoothness and texture that belies my age. I often see other women that I think are in their 50's, who I later find out are my age, and I am stunned at the difference in our "age appearance". I love the texture and feeling of Noxema Original Face Wash" on my face, and enjoy its distinctive scent. I now have added the use of moisturizers day and night, but besides the blessing of genetics (my Grandmother Anna looked 20 years younger than her age, her entire life), I attribute the youthful quality of my skin, to this product.
It also serves as "aromatherapy" for me, as I love the smell of eucalyptus, and this is a pleasant way to end my day.
Ingredients
Noxema Original Face Wash comes in blue jar (as it has for many years, though now the jars are plastic instead of glass) and is also available in a pump bottle version. I usually purchase it in a jar instead, as I prefer its firmer consistency as opposed to the pump bottle version. You will also have your choice of varying sizes, but the average size contains 10.75 oz. The 3 main ingredients are camphor, eucalyptus and menthol. These 3 not only account for its distinctive fragrance, but are what accounts for its distinctive advertised 'tingle'. The cleansing cream applies smoothly and easily, with no greasiness in feel, and feels very refreshing to the skin. It does a superb job of removing any oily residue on the skin, and for many, it will also do a good job of moisturizing (each persons skin needs will vary at any age, so you will need to see how well a job this does for you).
What don't I like about it?
There are times when I've found that it has irritated the skin around my nostrils, causing a slight burning sensation and some redness. Part of this, is the changing sensitivity and consistency of my skin as I age, and can not necessarily be blamed on this product I've used so faithfully for many years.
What might you not like about it?
The distinctive smell may not be one that you enjoy. If your skin is sensitive, you may find this is too strong a product for you. I'd suggest buying the smallest container possible for a trial, and using it on one portion of skin initially, as a skin test.
