I began using Nauance's, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, speech to text software shortly after I encountered a wrist injury on the job.
This software analyzes your speech patterns and tone style, your grammar and spelling abilities from email and word processed documents on your computer, etc. and then compares it with the results of several reading sessions it uses to evaluate your spoken language.
The end result is a very easy to use and moderately easy to learn speech to text system on your PC that allows you to simply write and control various aspects of your computer via your voice commands.
I have personally used this software on my pc and laptop to search websites, browse the internet, write papers, and control most of the functions on my computer.
Besides saying, "I love it", there are some downsides.
For instance, the ability to control your computer and search the web, is partly based on the performance abilities of your computer. You will want a computer powerful enough and with enough RAM memory. If your computer does not have the needed processing and memory requirements, it will let you know.
Also, it is not 100 percent accurate all of the time, and occasionally it will spell a word wrong, give type the wrong word or simply flash a cursor indicating it has no clue what you just said.
On the upside, the Dragon, Speech to Text Recognition software is actually very accurate.
If you find that it is not recognizing your words, a simple mic shift will often help.
You can also simply speak the words, "Spell that" and a window will pop up allowing you to speak the letters to spell the word. Then you can tell it to learn and it will ask you to speak a corresponding word for the text you just spelled for it. Once it learns your word, it will recognize it the next time.
I would call the Dragon, Speech to Text Recognition software, "Smart ware that learns", because it is continuously learning your speech and writing style, making adjustments and growing. It is almost as intelligent as some Artificial Intelligence software I used to work with.
I also like it's ability to act like a mouse movement, simply by telling it Up, Down, Right, Left, Stop, Mouse Click, Click-Click, etc.
This version of Naturally Speaking 10 Full Version, allows you to take notes with a tape recorder or even of a clearly spoken lecture at school and then play into back into your computer for the software to write out the notes for you. (You'll need a compatible digital recorder for this - Sony and others make them for about 99 dollars.)
If you have a work injury or some other kind of hand, wrist, arm disability and need to control a computer or write with a computer, this is what you need. It will have you almost up to full speed again, though it does have some minor limitations.
A feature I haven't explored much, since the standard features work well for me, is the ability to train it to respond to non-standard functions to do things on your computer.
Overall, I highly recommend this software. It is moderately easy to learn, control and will assist you, even if you need it for simply preventing problems before they begin to develop.
